Air source heat pumps in the Isle of Wight: how it works
Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. The work covers hot water cylinders, underfloor heating and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and people most often call us about replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and questions about where the outdoor unit can go.
We keep the work area tidy as we go, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes.
- Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Near you in Newport

Heat pumps across the Isle of Wight
In the Isle of Wight, we fit heat pumps in places such as Newport, Ryde and Cowes and well beyond. Every place on our the Isle of Wight list (125 in all) is covered.
From London flats to coastal homes and country cottages, London and the South East have every kind of property. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps. The Isle of Wight includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of outdoor coils and fixings. We choose positions and fixings with that in mind.
Newport: Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. Carisbrooke Castle lies about 1 mile south-west. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.
Fixed-price quotes for air source heat pumps in the Isle of Wight
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We check:
- The brand, model and parts involved
- The size of the job
- What electrical work the job needs
- Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
Putting several jobs into one visit can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every unit or room you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed price.
What we need to know
When you contact us, it’s useful to have:
- The paperwork from the last service, if you have it
- A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
- The remote or wall controller showing any error
Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Before you call an engineer
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.
Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
What happens if it’s left?
Planning rules have specific conditions. We look at the planning position early, so there are no surprises covering listed buildings, conservation areas and any Article 4 direction.
What your quote should include
- Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
- What’s in the price and what isn’t
- Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
- How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected
Common problems we fix in the Isle of Wight
People also ask about air-to-air heat pumps because they heat and cool. They warm rooms directly through indoor units and switch to cooling in warm weather. The grant only applies in some cases, so we check first.
Common reasons people call us are:
- Planning and permitted development questions
- Replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
FAQs for the Isle of Wight
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
Do you work on all makes?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
The work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. The survey lets us set a firm programme, and you can call us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line to book it.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?
It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.
What warranty do I get?
Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.
