FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we’re asked most about installing, paying for, looking after and getting permission for air conditioning.

Installation

Do you need to visit before giving a price?

For most installations, yes. A site survey lets us measure rooms, check outdoor unit positions, plan the pipe route and look at the power supply. For simple jobs, photos and measurements can be enough.

Which type of system do I need?

One hot room usually needs a wall-mounted split. Several rooms often suit a multi-split with one outdoor unit. If you want units out of sight, a ducted system may work. Offices and shops often use cassettes, and larger buildings VRF.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

Somewhere with good airflow, a sound wall or ground base, a pipe route to the indoor unit within the manufacturer’s limits, and space for servicing. We keep it away from neighbours’ windows where we can. Our guide to outdoor unit positions explains more.

Can air conditioning heat as well as cool?

Most modern split systems can. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. If you want heating too, tell us, as it affects the size of unit we recommend.

Which brands do you install?

Leading brands including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. We’ll suggest models that suit the room, your budget and how quiet you need it to be.

Costs, VAT and grants

How much does air conditioning cost?

Typical prices, supplied and fitted: one room £1,200–£2,200 + VAT; two rooms £2,800–£4,500 + VAT; three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Commercial VRF systems are priced after survey. See our prices page.

Is there VAT on air conditioning for my home?

HMRC’s Notice 708/6 zero-rates installing air source heat pumps in homes until 31 March 2027, then 5%. HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

Can I get a grant?

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces fossil-fuel heating and meets the home’s full heating demand. It must be fitted by an MCS certified installer, and we apply for you.

Can I get the grant for air conditioning added alongside my boiler?

No. The air-to-air grant is only for a system that replaces your existing fossil-fuel heating and heats the whole home. A unit added as a top-up alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify.

Is the quote fixed?

Yes. We give you a fixed-price quote after the survey. Installation prices include supply, fitting, commissioning and F-Gas documentation. If you change the job, we’ll agree any change in price with you first.

Servicing and repairs

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

We recommend once a year for most systems, and more often for busy commercial sites or units by the sea. An annual service is typically £95–£150 + VAT. Our guide to what a service includes lists each step.

Do you repair systems someone else installed?

Yes. We repair and service all the main makes, whoever fitted them. Repair call-outs start from £75 + VAT for diagnosis.

My system isn’t cooling. What should I check first?

Check the mode and set temperature, clean or replace the filters and make sure nothing is blocking the outdoor unit. If it still isn’t cooling, turn it off and call us. Our guide to why air conditioning stops cooling has more.

My system is on R410A. Can it still be repaired?

Yes. Repairing and topping up existing R410A systems is legal. Supply is getting tighter as the HFC phase-down continues, so top-ups may cost more over time. Our guide to the 2027 phase-down explains.

Do you offer emergency repairs?

Yes. Our 24/7 line is for breakdowns that can’t wait, such as a failed server room unit. See our emergency repair page.

Rules and paperwork

Do I need planning permission?

It depends. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development within limits on size, position and noise, set out by the Planning Portal. Cooling-only units, flats, listed buildings and some conservation areas need the council’s view. We advise on the survey.

I live in a leasehold flat. What do I need?

Usually your landlord’s written consent under the lease, and possibly planning permission. We can provide the details both will ask for. See our guide to leasehold consent.

What is a TM44 inspection?

An energy inspection required for air conditioning systems over 12 kW, at least every five years, by an accredited energy assessor. We help you prepare and fix what the report finds. See TM44 inspections.

Does my business need leak checks?

Yes, if a system holds 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent of refrigerant or more: at least every 12 months, more often for larger systems. GOV.UK explains the leak check rules.
