Air conditioning installation in Horsham
Horsham mixes an old market-town centre with a ring of newer estates, villages close by, and plenty of people working from home a few days a week. That makes a hot spare room or loft office a common problem in summer. We install, service and repair air conditioning across the town and the district, from one wall-mounted unit in a home office to multi-split systems for a whole house and commercial systems for offices and shops.
We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, and we work across West Sussex, Horsham included. We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We fit leading brands such as Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba and Hitachi, and we explain the manufacturer’s warranty for the unit you choose on your quote.
The process is the same for every job. We look at the property on a site survey, or from your photos for simpler jobs. You get a fixed-price quote. We install, repair or service the system. Then we commission it, record the refrigerant details for your F-Gas records and show you the controls. A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Our Horsham cost guide explains what affects the price.
For a system that’s stopped cooling, our repairs cover all makes, with diagnosis from £75 + VAT, and an annual service is typically £95–£150 + VAT.
A word on VAT. For homes, HMRC’s Notice 708/6 zero-rates installing air source heat pumps until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but whether yours qualifies depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. Business installations pay the standard rate.
Home offices, period houses and new estates
A home office is often the smallest room in the house, full of screens and chargers, and it can overheat quickly with the door shut. A single wall-mounted split is usually enough, sized to the room and its windows. Loft conversions are harder: heat rises, roofs soak up the sun, and the outdoor unit has to sit somewhere the pipework can reach. We plan those routes on the survey. Our guides to cooling a home office and loft conversions go further.
Horsham’s older streets have Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses, some listed and many in conservation areas. On those, appearance matters. We look for rear or side positions for the outdoor unit, keep pipework out of sight and choose indoor units that suit period rooms. Solid walls need core drilling, which we do carefully to protect plaster and decoration.
The newer estates around the town are simpler in most ways, with cavity walls, modern wiring and space for an outdoor unit at the side or rear. Well-insulated new homes do trap heat in summer, though, especially in upstairs bedrooms. A multi-split system lets one outdoor unit serve several rooms, typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT for two rooms and £4,500–£8,500 + VAT for three to five.
Some villages around Horsham have no mains gas and rely on oil or LPG. If you’re thinking of replacing an oil boiler, an air-to-water heat pump may qualify for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, and until March 2027 an extra £1,500 is available for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas. We’re MCS certified and apply for the grant for you. Heat pumps are £8,000–£16,000, at 0% VAT on homes, before the grant.
Noise is worth thinking about in quieter roads and villages, where an outdoor unit can be the loudest thing outside at night. We choose positions away from bedroom windows and patios, use anti-vibration mounts and size units so they aren’t running flat out. Our guide to air conditioning noise explains what to expect.
A recent job in Horsham
Hurst Road, Horsham (RH12)
- Property
- A converted Victorian terraced house operating as a dental practice.
- Work carried out
- Installation of two LG wall-mounted split systems: one serving the main treatment room and one serving the reception and waiting area. The Victorian property required careful routing of pipework to avoid visible external runs, achieved by running pipework through the roof void and down the internal party wall. All materials used were clinically appropriate and the installation was completed out of hours.
- Outcome
- Both treatment and waiting areas now maintain consistent temperature year-round. The practice owner noted that patient comfort had improved noticeably during summer months and that staff were significantly more comfortable during procedures.
Planning and conservation in Horsham District
Planning across the town and the surrounding villages is handled by Horsham District Council, which has guidance on whether you need permission and lets you view current applications. The district has dozens of conservation areas, including Horsham’s historic centre and London Road, each with a map and character statement on the council’s conservation areas page. Parts of the district fall within the South Downs National Park, where the National Park Authority handles planning.
For houses, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if it meets set limits. The Planning Portal’s heat pump guidance sets them out: an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not used solely for cooling, not on a pitched roof, and in conservation areas, not on a wall or roof facing the road. Flats have tighter limits. A cooling-only air conditioning unit isn’t covered, so it needs the council’s view. Listed building consent is separate.
We’ll tell you on the survey which route your job is likely to need and supply the product data and drawings for any application. The council decides, and we won’t start until the consents are in place. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease too, as most need the landlord’s consent for outdoor units.
A new circuit for the system is notifiable under Part P. As the Planning Portal explains, a registered competent person can self-certify it. We’re NICEIC approved, so that’s part of our job.
In the villages, many homes are older and some are listed, while others sit in their own conservation area. The same rules apply as in the town, and the council’s maps are the quickest way to check.
Offices, shops and businesses in Horsham
Horsham’s town centre has independent shops, restaurants, salons and professional offices, and the business parks around the town add offices, light industry and warehouses. We install and maintain commercial air conditioning for all of them, from cassette units in an office to VRF for larger buildings. See our pages on offices, retail and restaurants.
Business systems need leak checks above the F-gas thresholds and, over 12 kW, a TM44 inspection at least every five years. A maintenance contract keeps it all on schedule.
Smaller businesses often start with one or two wall-mounted units and add more as they grow. If you think you might expand, tell us on the survey; we can choose an outdoor unit or system type that leaves room to add indoor units later, rather than starting again. For a shop or salon, we pay attention to how the units look from the customer’s side, as well as how well they cool. Our air conditioning hire can bridge a hot spell while a permanent system is planned.
For surgeries, vets and clinics, we focus on steady temperatures, quiet units in treatment rooms and filters that are kept clean. Our guide to air conditioning in vets’ practices covers the particular needs of animal care.
Tell us how your premises are used through the day and the year, and we’ll design around it.
How it works
- Diagnose. We look at the rooms or building on a site survey, or from your photos for simple jobs, and work out what size and type of system it needs.
- Quote. You get a fixed-price quote with the make and model of every unit, the pipe runs, electrics and condensate route, and the VAT.
- Treat. An F-Gas certified engineer installs, repairs or services the system, with any new circuit done by our NICEIC approved electricians.
- Sign off. We commission and leak-test the system, keep the F-Gas records, explain the controls and go through the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand.

Questions from Horsham
Can you cool a loft office in Horsham?
Usually, yes. We size the unit to the room and plan where the outdoor unit and pipework can go, which is the main challenge in a loft.
Do you cover the villages around Horsham?
Yes. We work across Horsham District and the rest of West Sussex. Send us your postcode.
Can I get a grant for a heat pump?
An air-to-water heat pump can qualify for a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, plus £1,500 until March 2027 for homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas. We’re MCS certified and apply for you.
Do I need planning permission in the old town?
If your house is in a conservation area or is listed, the rules are tighter, and cooling-only units always need the council’s view. We’ll advise on the survey.
How much does a single room cost?
Typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, supplied and fitted, with a fixed-price quote after the survey.
