What heat pump installation involves
An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home. An air-to-water heat pump heats your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, replacing a boiler. An air-to-air heat pump blows warm air into each room and can also cool. We are MCS certified, so we survey the home, work out the heat loss room by room, size the heat pump and check the radiators, pipework and hot water cylinder. Air-to-water systems are typically £8,000–£16,000, at 0% VAT on homes, before the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. In England and Wales the grant is £7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump, and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that meets the scheme’s conditions. As the installer, we apply for it. Our heat pump cost guide explains the numbers in more detail.
We’re based in East Grinstead and cover London and the South East. We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member.

How it works
- We survey the home, measure the rooms, check the insulation, radiators and pipework and talk through how you use the heating.
- We calculate the heat loss, size the heat pump and cylinder, check the outdoor unit position and give you a fixed-price quote.
- Where you are eligible, we apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant before the installation goes ahead.
- The outdoor unit, cylinder, controls and any radiator or pipework upgrades are installed and the old heating is taken out where agreed.
- The system is commissioned and set up, we show you how to run it and hand over the MCS certificate and manufacturer’s warranty information.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
In England and Wales the scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source (air-to-water) or ground source heat pump and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. An air-to-air system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating, meet the home’s full heating demand and not be an add-on to a boiler. Installations must be by an MCS certified installer, and there is one grant per property. Until March 2027 an extra £1,500 is available for air source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas. The installer applies.
Planning and noise
On a house in England, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if the outdoor unit is no more than 1.5 cubic metres, it complies with MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check, and it meets rules on its position, such as not on a pitched roof. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and Article 4 areas have extra limits. We check the position on the survey. This is general information, not planning advice.
Is your home suitable?
Most homes can take a heat pump, but the design matters more than with a boiler. Heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, so some radiators may need to be bigger, and insulation and draughts make a real difference to running costs. Our heat loss survey shows what the home needs before you commit, and we tell you plainly if a heat pump isn’t the right choice.
Why it’s worth doing now
Two dates make a difference. The 0% VAT rate on heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, after which it becomes 5%. The extra £1,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme payment for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is also available until March 2027. If your boiler is getting old, planning a heat pump now means you choose the timing, rather than replacing a failed boiler in a hurry in the middle of winter.
What a good quote includes
- A site survey, or clear photos, before the price is fixed
- The make and model of every indoor and outdoor unit, not just “a 3.5 kW unit”
- Pipe runs, electrics, condensate drainage and making good
- Commissioning, a leak test and the F-Gas records
- The manufacturer’s warranty terms for that brand, in writing
- Whether VAT is added, and at what rate
Afterwards
At handover the system is commissioned and set up for your home, and we show you the controls, the hot water settings and what the heat pump will do in cold weather. You get the MCS certificate, the commissioning record and the manufacturer’s warranty information. Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and clutter. An annual service keeps it efficient and helps you meet the manufacturer’s warranty conditions.

Air source heat pump installation: common questions
How much does an air source heat pump cost?
Air-to-water heat pumps are typically £8,000–£16,000 installed, at 0% VAT on homes, before the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The size of the home, the heat loss, the cylinder and any radiator upgrades all affect the price. You get a fixed-price quote after the survey.
How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
In England and Wales it is £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that meets the conditions. Until March 2027 there is an extra £1,500 for air source or ground source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas. See GOV.UK: what you can get.
Who applies for the grant?
The installer does. As an MCS certified installer, we check your eligibility on the survey and apply for the grant before the work goes ahead. The grant is taken off what you pay.
Is there VAT on a heat pump?
Installing a heat pump in a home is zero-rated from 1 May 2023 to 31 March 2027, then 5%, under HMRC’s rules for energy-saving materials. Business premises pay the standard rate. See HMRC Notice 708/6. This is general information, not tax advice.
Do I need planning permission?
Often not, on a house in England, if the outdoor unit meets the permitted development conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and Article 4 areas have extra limits. See the Planning Portal or our planning guide.
Will I need new radiators?
Sometimes. Heat pumps work best at lower flow temperatures, so some rooms may need larger radiators. The heat loss survey shows which, and any changes are included in the quote.
Can a heat pump work with my existing boiler?
Hybrid systems, where a heat pump works alongside a boiler, aren’t eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. For the grant, the heat pump needs to replace the fossil-fuel heating.
What warranty comes with a heat pump?
The manufacturer’s warranty, on its terms. For example, Daikin offers 5–7 year extended warranties on its Altherma air-to-water units, subject to its conditions. We explain the terms for the model we quote.
Do you give a fixed price before you start?
Yes. After a site survey, or from photos for simple jobs, you get a fixed-price quote so you know the cost before any work starts.
How quickly do you reply?
We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown, there’s a 24/7 emergency line.
