What air source heat pumps can’t fix

Air source heat pumps cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It will not put right:

  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-water heat pumps

Air source heat pumps in Puckaster

Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. If you are dealing with questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and no space for a hot water cylinder, we can help.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Puckaster, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.

Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

Safe owner checks

Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Air source heat pumps around Puckaster

Puckaster lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. About 35% of homes in the Puckaster area were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. Period properties close to Church of St. John the Baptist can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What we do, step by step

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Seeing the property in photos first means the trip to Puckaster can be planned properly.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Before we arrive

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Let us know where the consumer unit is

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

Puckaster: your questions answered

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Puckaster?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Puckaster. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Isle of Wight council, normally the authority for Puckaster.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Puckaster?

Puckaster is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

It takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns that cannot wait. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. For simple jobs, photos and a few details can be enough, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
