Honest limits

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules

If in doubt, give us a ring on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Underfloor heating
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

About our air source heat pumps in Ryde

Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Guesswork leads to systems that are too big or too small. If the problem is checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and a boiler that’s getting old, we can help.

Most homes around Ryde have space for the outdoor unit, and it needs to meet the MCS noise check to be permitted development.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Questions from Ryde

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Ryde?

It can, as Ryde is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.

Can I fit a heat pump in Ryde without planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Ryde. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the local planning authority (for Ryde, normally Isle of Wight council).

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?

Yes, but only where it becomes the home’s main heating. An air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, meets the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and is in a home; as an add-on to a boiler it doesn’t qualify.

Do you work on all makes?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.

Will you make a mess?

Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Air source heat pumps around Ryde

Ryde lies within about 1 mile of the sea. For a heat pump near the sea, ask about any coastal protection option the manufacturer offers. About 47% of homes in Ryde and the neighbourhoods around it were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed.

Nunwell House lies about 2.8 miles south. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

How it works

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the photos you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. After that, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Photos of the room and the outside wall help us plan a job in Ryde.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Tell us about parking and loading

How to get a quote

To help us quote: where the property is and what kind of building it is, photos of the rooms or units, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Then give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us.

When to call us in Ryde

Extensions, renovations and loft conversions are a natural time to rethink the heating. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Comparing heat pump types
  • Checking whether planning permission is needed
  • Not knowing whether a grant applies

If your home is near Ryde St Johns Road station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits.

What your quote should include

  • What records you get at the end
  • Whether they looked at the job before pricing it
  • Proof of F-Gas company certification
