Air source heat pumps in Chale

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Chale

Does being near the sea make a difference to air source heat pumps in Chale?

It can, as Chale is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.

Is the heat pump grant available in Chale?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Chale, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes, on every job. A new system comes with commissioning details, F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information, and repairs and services get a record of the work.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, 24/7. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we will talk you through the next steps.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights, so we check during the survey.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Chale

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. We’re often asked to deal with ageing boilers that will need replacing and comparing heat pump types, across underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

For a home around Chale that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.

Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order and each visit is recorded.

Before you call an engineer

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and phone 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

How it works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the photos you sent. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. If a lane or gateway near Chale is tight for a van, let us know and we will plan for it.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Preparing for the visit

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Ask for a quote

Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because every property is different. Once we have looked at the job, from photos or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To start, phone 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

Advice

How we price air source heat pumps

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • What kind of system it is
  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
  • How easy the units are to reach

Typical ranges are on our prices page, but each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will talk you through it.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Your installation or service records
  • The address and the type of property
  • Any error code or flashing light on the display

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your pictures and details. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Leave it or put it right?

Radiators that are too small for a heat pump’s lower flow temperature leave rooms cool. The survey picks this up before installation. Dealing with it now is normally simpler than a breakdown later.

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Homes in Chale and heat pumps

Chale is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. VOA council tax data put about 35% of homes in the Chale area before 1919, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. The middle of Chale is part of a conservation area. About 16 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Chale, Church of St Andrew (grade II*) among them. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with Isle of Wight council, normally the planning authority here where needed.

Live in one of the older houses around St Andrew's Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Wolverton Manor, roughly 3.4 miles north-west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings.
