About our air source heat pumps in Plaish

We begin with a room-by-room heat loss survey. It shows how much heat each room needs on a cold day, so the heat pump and the radiators or indoor units can be sized properly. Guesswork leads to systems that are too big or too small. Common call-outs are for checking whether planning permission is needed and questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, on hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps.

Older and listed homes in villages like Plaish need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.

We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

Homes in Plaish and heat pumps

The 2021 Census found about 66% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Carisbrooke Castle lies about 0.8 miles north-east. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St. Nicholas in Castro? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

Plaish is about 2 miles south-west of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Our engineers cover Plaish for air source heat pumps and across the rest of the Isle of Wight. Our area takes in 125 places across the Isle of Wight. Our Worthing page covers places nearby (42 miles or so).

Jobs in PO30 are looked at, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. Places around Plaish that are also on our list: Bowcombe (1 mile south-west), Clatterford (1 mile north-east), Carisbrooke (1 mile north-east), Gunville (1 mile north) and Gatcombe (2 miles south-east). Larger places within reach include Ryde (8 miles east), Cowes (5 miles north), Sandown (8 miles east) and Shanklin (8 miles south-east). If your property is somewhere remote, a little more planning is needed, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

Plaish questions

Is the heat pump grant available in Plaish?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Plaish, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Plaish?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The centre of Plaish is in a conservation area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with Isle of Wight council, which is normally the planning authority for Plaish first.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

It takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time and the timing is set out with your quote.

When will I hear back?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water and the survey helps decide.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. That isn’t optional: it’s required by law, and we hold it.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll agree what happens next.

How the job changes from property to property

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Only one grant is available per property, and it cannot replace a low-carbon system, and hybrid systems are not eligible.

VAT on heat pumps

For air-to-air systems, HMRC’s view depends on the product and the situation and the VAT is confirmed on your quote.

How it works

Each visit runs to the same pattern: agree the plan on site, protect the area, carry out the job, check the system and explain it all to you. The visit itself takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. For a place like Plaish, the timing is set with you and the travel is our side of the planning.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

How to prepare

  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in

Advice

Honest limits

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what air source heat pumps will not do:

  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
  • Improving the building’s insulation

Not sure which it is? You can ring us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Radiator systems
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating

Before you call an engineer

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

What a customer said

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
