About our air source heat pumps in Spring Vale

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you will need another way to do that. The work covers underfloor heating, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are ageing boilers that will need replacing and working out where a cylinder could go.

Older and listed homes in villages like Spring Vale need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

The process

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. On site, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. If a lane or gateway near Spring Vale is tight for a van, let us know and we’ll plan for it.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go

Getting a quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
  • Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf

Homes in Spring Vale and heat pumps

Spring Vale is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. About 36% of homes in and around Spring Vale were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 61% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Period properties close to St. Peter's Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

FAQs for Spring Vale

Is the heat pump grant available in Spring Vale?

Spring Vale is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Spring Vale?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. A conservation area takes in the middle of Spring Vale. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the local planning authority (for Spring Vale, typically Isle of Wight council).

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

How quickly will you reply?

The same working day. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

What accreditations do you have?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Landlords, letting agents and managing agents book us, not only the people who live or work in the property. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork and we will copy in whoever needs it.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the property, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed-price quote.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Spring Vale?

An ageing boiler is often the moment people start thinking about a heat pump. Planning the change before the boiler fails gives you time to survey, design and apply for any grant, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.

If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Not knowing whether a grant applies
  • Comparing heat pump types
  • Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating

With Nunwell House about 3.2 miles south-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Before you book anyone

  • Whether extra work needs your approval first
  • Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
  • If the quote is based on a survey, photos or a diagnosis
