Air conditioning across PO31: what to expect
Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. We’re often asked to deal with rooms heated by plug-in heaters and bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer, on wall-mounted split systems, multi-split systems and VRF systems.
The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
- Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
- Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where needed.
- Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.
What you will pay
Our prices page shows typical ranges, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will explain what it covers.

Ask for a quote
Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
Around Cowes
We fit and service air conditioning in homes and premises around Isle of Wight Studio School, Cowes Enterprise College and St. Faith's Church, among other places. Other local landmarks include The Painters Arms (0.5 miles north-east) and Cowes Primary School (less than half a mile north). Nearby you’ll also find Isle of Wight Natural History Centre (0.5 miles south-west) and West Cowes Castle (0.7 miles north). Green spaces nearby include Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.
Air conditioning around PO31
In PO31, we install in places such as Cowes, Barton and Hunny Hill and well beyond. Every place on our PO31 list (9 in all) is covered.
We’re based in East Grinstead and work across London and the South East, PO31 included. Each job starts with a survey and a fixed-price quote. Parts of PO31 are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on outdoor units. We choose positions and fixings with that in mind.
Cowes: Older streets near St. Faith's Church may fall within a conservation area, so we check the planning position before choosing where the outdoor unit goes. Osborne House, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.
What we are called out for in PO31
Rooms in the roof are often the hardest to keep cool. The roof takes the full force of the sun, and warm air rises from the floors below, which is why a loft bedroom can still be warm at bedtime.
Any of these is worth a proper look:
- A loft conversion that is too warm to use
- A study or office that overheats during the day
- Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
- Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
When it’s something else
Air conditioning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)
- Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)
- A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
How we price air conditioning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- Whether the existing supply is suitable
- The number of rooms, units or zones
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone 07833 053749 or send an email for straight advice and a fixed price.
Before you get in touch
Good pictures often save a visit. Try to include:
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
- Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
Need a price for air conditioning? Please call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and tell us about the job. We’ll explain what we’d recommend and why, then send a fixed-price quote before anything is booked.
Why deal with it now?
Size matters more than brand. An undersized unit runs hard and still cannot keep the room cool; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Sizing each room properly on the survey avoids both.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whose warranty applies, and on what terms
- If the quote is based on a survey, pictures or a diagnosis
- Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
- What’s in the price and what isn’t
FAQs for PO31
Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?
In most cases, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
Which type of air conditioning is best?
Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.
Can you fit air conditioning in a leasehold flat?
In many cases, but permissions come first. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls, so check the lease. Permitted development rules for flats are also tighter than for houses, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.
Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?
In most cases. The fuse board is checked on the survey, and any electrical work goes on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
That depends on the brand. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we will tell you what your brand asks for.
