Air source heat pumps for Lake

Air source heat pumps in Lake, done properly

Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside with electricity running the compressor and fans. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way and the Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. Common call-outs are for working out whether radiators need upsizing and planning and permitted development questions, on air-to-water heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and underfloor heating.

For a house near Lake, space outside is rarely the problem, so the main questions are heat loss, radiators and the electrics.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-air heat pumps

A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger, and the survey checks each one.

After we’ve gone

Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:

  • Keep radiators clear
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
  • Diary the next service

Where we applied for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, we keep you informed through the process, as the installer applies for it.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running as explained at handover.

Lake: your questions answered

Is the heat pump grant available in Lake?

Lake is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Does being near the sea make a difference to air source heat pumps in Lake?

It can, as Lake is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. The outdoor unit position, its fixings and regular servicing all help near the sea.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights and we look at it during the survey.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Air-to-water systems are £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before any grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

When will I hear back?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

It takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. The cylinder, the radiators and the pipework make the biggest difference and the timing is set out with your quote.

How it works

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before work begins, so you can plan around it. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. In a place like Lake, parking is rarely an issue, but tell us about gates and access to the back of the property.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property

What a heat pump looks like in Lake

At about 1 mile from the coast, Lake is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. The middle of Lake is part of a conservation area. About 5 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Lake, Church of the Good Shepherd (grade II) among them. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with Isle of Wight council, typically the planning authority here where needed. About 83% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Period properties close to Church of The Good Shepherd can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. If your home is near Lake station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits.

How we price air source heat pumps

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • What state the existing equipment is in
  • How far the pipework has to run, and where
  • The number of rooms, units or zones

Several rooms, units or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every unit or room you need covered, and you’ll get one fixed price.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • The fuse board and where it is in the property
  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit

For a fixed-price quote, ring 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and tell us about the property and what you need. A few pictures make it quicker. You’ll hear back from us the same working day.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
