Air source heat pumps in Bembridge and nearby

Air source heat pumps in Bembridge

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems don’t heat hot water, so you will need another way to do that. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-air heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are planning and permitted development questions and questions about where the outdoor unit can go.

Cottages and older homes near Bembridge can lose heat faster, which a heat loss calculation will show. Sometimes insulating first makes more sense.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

System by system

Heat loss surveys

We look at walls, windows, floors, roofs and ventilation along with the room sizes.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger so we check them against each room’s heat loss.

Homes in Bembridge and heat pumps

Bembridge lies within about 1 mile of the sea. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The last census (2021) found about 80% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. The middle of Bembridge is part of a conservation area. Historic England lists about 13 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Bembridge, including Rose Cottage (grade II). For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the local planning authority (normally Isle of Wight council) where necessary.

Live in one of the older houses around Bembridge Methodist Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Yaverland Manor lies about 2.4 miles south-west. Owners of listed homes need consent before a heat pump is fitted, so it’s one of our first questions.

Bembridge is about 4 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Wherever you are in the PO35 postcode area, we can help with air source heat pumps. Bembridge is one of 125 towns, villages and districts in the Isle of Wight where we work. You can also see our page for Worthing, about 31 miles away.

Our working area takes in PO35 in full. Whether you are on High Street, Church Road and Station Road or a nearby road, we can help. Close to Bembridge, our area also takes in Foreland Fields (1 mile south-east), Hillway (1 mile south-west), St Helens (1 mile north-west), Gaskins (2 miles west) and Nettlestone (2 miles north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (9 miles west), Ryde (4 miles north-west), Cowes (11 miles north-west) and Sandown (4 miles south-west). For island and remote properties, the visit takes a little more planning, so let us know when you get in touch.

Landmarks near Bembridge

Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to Bembridge School and The Windmill Hotel and the streets around them. Nearby you will also find Lilliput Museum of Antique Dolls And Toys (2.6 miles west) and Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children (5.5 miles south-west). For a walk, there’s Bembridge Down and Brading Marshes RSPB reserve.

Bembridge: your questions answered

Is the heat pump grant available in Bembridge?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Bembridge, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Does sea air affect air conditioning in Bembridge?

It can, as Bembridge is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need and the fixed price is built on it.

Will I need planning consent for an air source heat pump?

That depends on your home and the unit’s position. Flats have tighter limits, conservation areas add conditions, and Article 4 directions can remove rights and we look at it during the survey.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes, always. A new system comes with commissioning details, F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information, while repairs and services get a written note of what was found and done.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Which type of heat pump is right for my home?

Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water, and we explain which suits your home.

What happens if it’s left?

The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. For homes that qualify, that is a reason to look into it now. A system that’s left with a fault, or without a service, typically costs more to run.

The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, how easy the units are to reach and what the work involves. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

Before you call an engineer

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

How it works

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker, and we tidy up before we leave. Visits to a place like Bembridge are planned ahead, so we arrive with what the job needs.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

Getting ready for the visit
