Air source heat pumps in Morton, done properly

A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If you are dealing with working out whether radiators need upsizing and not knowing whether a grant applies, we can sort it out.

In a place like Morton, some homes are listed, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.

Looking after a system is mostly common sense: clear space around the outdoor unit, the cleaning the manual describes and a service at the recommended interval. It also keeps you on the right side of any warranty terms that ask for servicing.

What happens if it’s left?

The two types suit different homes and needs. Air-to-water works with radiators and a cylinder, with a £7,500 grant for eligible homes, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms and has a £2,500 grant only in limited cases. We explain which makes sense for you. An early booking makes the visit to Morton easier to arrange.

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

Morton questions

Will a heat pump in Morton need planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. A conservation area takes in the middle of Morton. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Isle of Wight council, usually the authority for Morton.

Will you come out to Morton?

Yes. Morton is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so check the terms or ask us. Keep every service record either way.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It varies from room to room. The survey compares each radiator with the room’s needs, so the quote covers any changes.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for problems that can’t wait for a planned visit. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

Under HMRC Notice 708/6, a heat pump installed in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027 and 5% after that. With air-to-air, HMRC’s view depends on the product, so we confirm the VAT on the quote.

Rented and managed buildings

Bigger systems bring extra duties: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side, and the paperwork can go to both.

When something else is needed

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council
  • Formal advice on VAT for your situation
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Where we work

  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating
  • Radiator systems

The process

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. The work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Morton.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board

Getting a quote
