How air conditioning works in Hertfordshire
We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see, and we explain the options on the survey. We are often asked to deal with a system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement and rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night, on ceiling cassettes, VRF systems and wall-mounted split systems.
We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. After that, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- We survey the property, or work from your photos for a simple job.
- Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
- On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
- Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
- We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.
How we quote
Whatever the property, the quote works the same way: what’s needed, how we reach it, the parts and the labour. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll explain each part.
Why choose AirCon Doctor
- F-Gas certified company
- Members of Checkatrade
- NICEIC approved electrical contractors
- A site survey and a fixed-price quote
Getting a quote
VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it on the quote. For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email.
Landmarks near Watford
In Watford, that means homes and buildings near The Estcourt Arms, Watford St John's Church of England Primary School and Church of St Andrew. Also close by are Cassiobury Park (0.8 miles west) and The Watford UTC (0.5 miles east). There’s a railway station in Watford itself: Watford Junction station. Well-known places in the area include Hilfield Castle (2.8 miles east) and Charter Place (0.5 miles south). For a walk, there’s Harrow Weald Common.
Where we install in Hertfordshire
Our air conditioning work across Hertfordshire takes in places such as Watford, Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage and the smaller places around them. We cover every place we list for Hertfordshire, 381 in all.
Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and Hertfordshire sits within it. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.
Watford: If you work from home near Watford Junction station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool. With historic houses such as High Elms Manor about 2.6 miles north, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules.
What the work involves, system by system
Ceiling cassettes
A cassette needs a void above the ceiling for the unit, pipework and drain, and many use a built-in condensate pump to lift the water away. The survey confirms the void and the drain route.
Wall-mounted split systems
Bedrooms, offices and living spaces are where wall-mounted units are most often fitted. We choose the position for even airflow and easy filter access, and away from where the air would blow straight onto people.
What happens if it’s left?
Size matters more than brand. An undersized unit runs hard and still can’t keep the room cool; an oversized one cycles on and off and wastes energy. Getting the sizing right at the survey stage avoids both problems.
Questions to ask before booking
- If the quote is based on a survey, pictures or a diagnosis
- Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
- Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
- Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
What affects the cost of air conditioning
Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- What state the existing equipment is in
- The brand, model and parts involved
- Whether the existing supply is suitable
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
What to send for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- The fuse board and where it is in the property
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
Quotes do not take long. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.
When it’s something else
Air conditioning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:
- Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
- A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
- Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation
Hertfordshire: your questions answered
Where will you put the outdoor unit?
The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We will tell you what to check before we fit it.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. You get a written record of every visit, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.
Which type of air conditioning is best?
The right one depends on how many rooms you want to cool, how much space there is outside and how visible you want the indoor units to be. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.
Do I need planning permission?
Not necessarily. Permitted development can cover a heat pump on a house, including an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools since 2025, provided the conditions are met. Permission is more likely to come up for cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing positions in conservation areas and the survey picks it up. This is general information, not legal advice.
How much does air conditioning installation cost?
From £1,200 + VAT for a single-room split, with a typical range of £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork, and we fix it after a survey or from your photos.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.
