How air conditioning works in SG7
Thinking about air conditioning but not sure where to start? Just phone us on 07833 053749 or email us with pictures of the rooms and the outside of the property, and you’ll hear back from us the same working day to arrange a survey or a quote. Common call-outs are for a portable unit with a hose out of the window and working from home in a room that gets too warm, across ducted systems, wall-mounted split systems and ceiling cassettes.
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then the work itself, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. The middle part takes longest, which takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.
- We survey the property, or work from your photos for a simple job.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
- We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.
What you will pay
Leaving a fault or an overdue service rarely makes the work cheaper. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you are not sure what’s needed, ring us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed price.
What you get with us
- One contact for properties across the South East and London
- Checkatrade member
- 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns
- F-Gas certified company
Getting a quote
Here’s what helps us quote: where the property is and what kind of building it is, photos of the rooms or units, the brand and model of anything already fitted and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Once you have those, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email.
Local landmarks in Baldock
Typical jobs here are in properties near The Knights Templar School, Hartsfield Junior Mixed and Infant School and Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Also close by are Norton School (1.4 miles west) and The White Lion Public House (within half a mile south). Baldock has its own railway station: Baldock station. Nearby you will also find Fairfield Hospital (2.8 miles west) and First Garden City Heritage Museum (1.8 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Purwell Ninesprings.
Where we install in SG7
In SG7, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: cooling-only units aren’t covered, listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road.
London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps.
Baldock: Homes near Church of St. Mary the Virgin are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Hinxworth Place, about 3.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.
Signs you need air conditioning
Rooms in the roof are often the hardest to keep cool. The roof takes the full force of the sun, and warm air rises from the floors below, so a bedroom or office under the roof can stay warm well into the night.
If any of these sounds familiar, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
- Working from home in a room that gets too warm
- An old system that needs replacing
- Expensive direct electric heating
Looking after your system
A little care keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter
- Use moderate settings for comfort and economy
- Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
- Book an annual service
Commissioning is the last stage: every mode is tested before we go. We check it’s running as the manufacturer intends, then show you the controls and the timer, so you’re confident using it.
Clean the filters regularly, not just at the service. Clean filters keep the air moving and help the system work as designed, so it uses less electricity for the same comfort.
What owners can safely do
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in SG7
The quote reflects the job in front of us. We take into account:
- Whether the existing supply is suitable
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
- The number of rooms, units or zones
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
Homes, offices, shops and public buildings are all priced the same way: the equipment, the access, the work involved and the time it takes. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we’ll explain each part.
Asking for a quote
What to send for a quote:
- The paperwork from the last service, if you have it
- The make and model of the system, from the label
- The address and the type of property
- Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit

FAQs for SG7
Does air conditioning work as heating?
Most of the time, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. It’s the record a manufacturer or the next engineer will ask to see: a dated note of the work, with refrigerant details where they apply.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat?
Often, yes, but there are extra steps. You’ll normally need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route and the lease will say. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
Do you work in SG7?
Yes. SG7 is part of the area we cover, as part of our area across London and the South East. We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
Do I need a new electrical circuit?
Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
