About air conditioning in SG4
Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, ducted systems and air-to-air heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are a portable unit with a hose out of the window and a study or office that overheats during the day.
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. On site, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

Here’s what helps us quote: the address and the type of property, photos of the rooms or units, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Then call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.
Local landmarks in Hitchin
In Hitchin, that means homes and buildings near Highbury Infant School and Nursery, Radcliffe Arms and Butts Close. Nearby too are Kingshott School (1 mile south-east), St Mary's Church (under half a mile south-west), Church of the Holy Saviour (less than half a mile north-east) and Hitchin Girls' School (within half a mile south-east). For a walk, there’s Purwell Ninesprings and Markham's Hill.
Air conditioning across SG4
Planning rules are the same across England, SG4 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.
SG4 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. One phone number covers all of it.
Hitchin: Plenty of people near Hitchin station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit. If your home is in one of the older streets near Church of the Holy Saviour, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.
What owners can safely do
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Rented and managed buildings
Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so work at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system, and we can work for either side.
Leave it or put it right?
New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use F gases with a GWP above 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.
What your quote should include
- Whether they looked at the job before pricing it
- If the figure could change on the day
- Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
- How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected
After we’ve gone
How well a system lasts depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Book an annual service
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- File the paperwork with the manual
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
Questions after the installation go to the same number. Tell us what the system is doing, and any code on the display, and we will talk it through with you.
Report drips, noises or error codes early. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display normally means something needs attention, and early repairs are normally simpler.
Your questions about air conditioning in SG4
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before any work starts, and the area is kept tidy throughout. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
Which type of system should I choose?
There’s no single best type. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. We recommend one on the survey and explain why.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat?
Often, yes, but there are extra steps. You will usually need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route and the lease will say. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.
Are you F-Gas certified?
We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
How quickly will you reply?
You will hear from us the same working day. For a breakdown that cannot wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.
