About air conditioning in SG3
Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. At sign-off, the system is tested in each mode, the controls are explained and the F-Gas records are left with you. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, VRF systems and air-to-air heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are a loft conversion that’s too warm to use and a study or office that overheats during the day.
Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we show you what we’ve done and answer any questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. All told, the work takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
- Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
- Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where necessary.
- Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

What’s near Knebworth
Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to Church of St Martin, Knebworth Park and Knebworth Primary and Nursery School, among other places. There’s a railway station in Knebworth itself: Knebworth station. Other landmarks nearby include Benington Castle (3.6 miles north-east) and Datchworth Museum (1.7 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Mardley Heath.
Air conditioning across SG3: local notes
Planning rules are the same across England, SG3 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.
Across London and the South East, we reply to enquiries the same working day, and our emergency line is open 24/7.
Knebworth: Close to Knebworth station? A small study or box room used for work can normally be cooled with a single indoor unit. Homes near Church of St Martin are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.
For landlords and property managers
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side, and the paperwork can go to both.
Bigger systems bring extra duties: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.
What air conditioning can’t fix
We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Draughts and missing insulation
- Central heating repairs
- A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
Different systems, different jobs
Ducted systems
Ducted air conditioning hides the indoor unit in a ceiling void or loft, and all you see is a discreet grille. It’s popular where people do not want a unit on the wall.
Outdoor unit positions
Where outside space is tight, the outdoor unit position shapes the whole design. We look at walls, roofs, balconies and yards on the survey, and tell you about any permissions you may need.
Looking after it afterwards
To keep the system working properly:
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code
- Let filters dry fully before you put them back
- Shut doors and windows when it’s on
We recommend an annual service, and some manufacturers make servicing a warranty condition. We will remind you when it’s due, so it does not get forgotten.
Give the outdoor unit room to breathe. Leaves, plants, bins and stored items around it restrict the airflow, and the system has to work harder as a result.
SG3 questions
Can you fit air conditioning in a leasehold flat?
That depends on the lease, the building and where the outdoor unit could go. Balconies, flat roofs and rear walls can all work, subject to consent, and we check the options on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, 24/7. Call the emergency line and tell us the make, the symptoms and any error code, and we’ll talk you through the next steps.
What warranty do I get?
The manufacturer provides it, on its own terms. Some brands make regular servicing a condition, so keep your service records.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
Do you work on all makes?
We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
Check the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so check the terms or ask us. Keep every service record either way.
