Air conditioning in SG14: how it works
We fit wall-mounted splits, multi-split systems, ducted systems and ceiling cassettes, with VRF for larger buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see, and we explain the options on the survey. Common call-outs are for a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and not knowing which system, size or brand to choose, on ducted systems, wall-mounted split systems and multi-split systems.
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
- Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
- Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where needed.
- Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
- The sign-off: commissioning, a walk through the controls, and the F-Gas records and warranty details.

Air conditioning across SG14: local notes
Across SG14, from Hertford, Bengeo and Horns Mill to the villages, homes range from older terraces and cottages to new estates and flats. We survey every property before we quote, then a fixed-price quote.
An F-Gas certified company does the refrigerant side, while NICEIC approval covers the electrical work.
Hertford: If your home is in one of the older streets near Hertford United Reform Church, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install. If you work from home near Hertford East station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in SG14
Typical ranges are on our prices page, and your quote is built on your job. What we look at:
- Access, including height, roofs and ladders
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
- The condition of any existing system
Every job is different, so each one gets its own fixed-price quote. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all play a part.
Helping us quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price a simple job. Useful things to send:
- Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
- Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit
- The address and the type of property
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
For anyone managing more than one building, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Each property gets its own records, so the files stay tidy.
Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the paperwork can go to both.
Before you call an engineer
Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
What the work involves, system by system
Ducted systems
Ducted air conditioning hides the indoor unit in a ceiling void or loft, with only neat grilles showing in the room. It’s popular where people don’t want a unit on the wall.
Offices, shops and commercial rooms
Offices and shops normally need several units and sensible central controls. We size for the people, equipment and glazing in the space and we plan the installation around your opening hours where we can.
SG14 questions
Do you work for landlords and businesses?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size in SG14 and across Hertfordshire. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. At the end, we clear up and show you what we’ve done.
Do I need planning permission?
Not necessarily. On a house, air-to-water heat pumps and, since 2025, air-to-air systems that heat as well as cool can be permitted development if they meet the conditions. Cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing spots in conservation areas are where it normally comes up and the survey picks it up. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine, on all the main brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.
Can air conditioning heat my home as well?
Typically, yes. Running as a heat pump, it moves heat in from outside rather than making it from electricity alone. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.
How does the warranty work?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for instance, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while bigger systems and repairs that need testing get a visit.
