How air conditioning works in SG5
A new system normally needs a dedicated circuit from the fuse board. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. Common call-outs are for a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and a room that’s unbearable on warm days, across ducted systems, multi-split systems and air-to-air heat pumps.
If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before we start so it does not catch you out. For businesses, we can typically work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

The closest station to Stotfold is Arlesey station, roughly 1.7 miles north-west of the centre. Where we install in SG5
In SG5, we install in places such as Hitchin, Stotfold and Benslow and well beyond. Every place on our SG5 list (22 in all) is covered.
An F-Gas certified company does the refrigerant side, while NICEIC approval covers the electrical work.
Stotfold: Hinxworth Place, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it. If your home is in one of the older streets near Church of St Mary the Virgin, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.
What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Good habits make our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.
Pricing air conditioning in SG5
The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:
- The pipe route between the units
- How easy the units are to reach
- Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
- Whether the existing supply is suitable
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed price.
Helping us quote
Simple jobs can often be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
- Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
- A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because every property is different. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, give us a ring on 07833 053749.
Keeping the system healthy
Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:
- Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use
- Shut doors and windows when it’s on
- Keep to the service interval the manufacturer recommends
- Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
The handover includes the records you need: F-Gas records, commissioning details and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. File them together as they’re needed for servicing and any warranty question.
Set it and leave it. Choose the right mode and a comfortable temperature rather than the lowest setting and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.
Why deal with it now?
The best time to plan air conditioning is before the hot weather, not during it. A rushed choice is often the wrong size or in the wrong place, and that’s hard to put right later. Booking the survey early gives you time to weigh up the options.
Comparing quotes
- Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
- Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
- Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
FAQs for SG5
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.
Will you make a mess?
We start with protection: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we will tell you what to do first.
How long does air conditioning installation take?
Allow about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. We confirm the time when we quote so there are no surprises.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.
How do you size the system?
It depends on the room, not only its floor area. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.
