Air conditioning across AL4: what to expect
Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. Typical jobs include fans and portables that don’t keep up and expensive direct electric heating, across ceiling cassettes, air-to-air heat pumps and wall-mounted split systems.
Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first, so you can plan around it. For businesses, we can usually work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
- Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
- Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where needed.
- Testing: the circuit is pressure tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.
- The sign-off: commissioning, a walk through the controls, and the F-Gas records and warranty details.
What you’ll pay
Typical ranges are on our prices page, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.
Why people in AL4 choose us
- Covering London and the South East
- An F-Gas certified company, as the law requires
- A 24/7 emergency line
- A fixed price before any work starts
Getting a quote
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by photos or a survey, the price is fixed. To get going, call us on 07833 053749 or send an email.

Air conditioning around AL4
From St Albans, Bernards Heath and Marshalswick outwards, AL4 has every kind of home. Each install starts with a survey of the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go, then a fixed-price quote.
London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps.
Marshalswick: Batchwood Hall (roughly 2 miles west) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on. Older streets near Saint Mary's may fall within a conservation area, so we check the planning position before choosing where the outdoor unit goes.
Honest limits
Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:
- A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
- Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)
- A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
Owner checks or an engineer?
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in AL4
Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- How many units are involved
- What state the existing equipment is in
Every job is different, so we price each one individually. The system, the access, the pipe routes and the parts involved all make a difference.
Asking for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- A few photos of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- Your installation or service records
- The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
If you need air conditioning in AL4, call 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us what kind of property it is and what you’d like done, and send a few pictures if you can. We reply the same working day.
System by system
Ducted systems
Ducted units can feed several rooms through a network of ducts, which suits new builds, extensions and refurbishments where ceilings are open.
Ceiling cassettes
A cassette needs a void above the ceiling for the unit, pipework and drain, and many use a built-in condensate pump to lift the water away. The survey confirms the void and the drain route.
AL4: your questions answered
How do you size the system?
Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it and the survey covers each of them.
Is AL4 in your area?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, and that includes AL4.
Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?
It can go on a wall bracket, at ground level or on a flat roof, chosen for the pipe route, airflow and access. Noise near bedrooms and boundaries is part of the decision, and the position can affect planning.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes, on every job. A new system comes with commissioning details, F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information, and repairs and services get a record of the work.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for problems that cannot wait for a planned visit. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.
Is air conditioning possible in a flat?
Often, yes, but there are extra steps. You will typically need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route and the lease will say. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
