Air conditioning in AL2

About air conditioning in AL2

Single-room systems are typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, while a two-room multi-split is typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation are all included, and commercial VRF systems are priced after a survey. We’re often asked to deal with working from home in a room that gets too warm and old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient, on ducted systems, multi-split systems and ceiling cassettes.

Think of the visit in three stages: look, put right and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then the work itself, and finally we test, record and explain. Most of the time goes on the middle part, which takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
  2. Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

How we quote

Putting several jobs into one visit often makes better use of the time. Mention every unit or room you need covered and we will price it together.

What’s near London Colney

We fit and service air conditioning in homes and premises around Samuel Ryder Academy, Church of St Peter and White Horse pub and the streets around them. You will also find Highfield Park (1.4 miles north) and Bowmansgreen Primary School (within half a mile south-west). For rail, the closest station is Park Street station, roughly 1.9 miles west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Napsbury Hospital (0.5 miles west) and St Albans Musical Museum (2.6 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Verulamium Lake and Broad Colney Lakes.

Air conditioning across AL2: local notes

Planning rules are the same across England, AL2 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

AL2 is within the area we cover from our base in East Grinstead. Every job starts with a site survey or photos, then a fixed-price quote.

London Colney: Living close to Church of St Peter? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. About 3.9 miles north-west stands Batchwood Hall. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

When something else is needed

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air conditioning will not do:

  • Draughts and missing insulation
  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation

Leave it or put it right?

New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg can’t use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.

Comparing quotes

  • What’s in the price and what isn’t
  • Whether the price is fixed or an estimate
  • Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it
  • If the quote is based on a survey, pictures or a diagnosis

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after it is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Report drips, noises or error codes right away
  • Don’t cover or box in the outdoor unit
  • Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
  • Never run the system with the filters out

The handover includes the records you need: the commissioning details, the F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty information. File them together, because the manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Set it and leave it. Choose the right mode and a comfortable temperature rather than the lowest setting, and close windows and doors while it’s cooling.

Common problems we fix in AL2

Bedrooms that are too warm at night are a frequent reason for a call. Once a bedroom has soaked up heat during the day, opening a window may not bring the temperature down far enough, particularly when there’s no breeze.

Any of these is worth a proper look:

  • A portable unit with a hose out of the window
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • Expensive direct electric heating
  • An ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life

FAQs for AL2

Do you cover AL2?

Yes. Our engineers work in AL2, within the South East and London area we cover. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

We agree it with you on the survey. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We’ll tell you what to check before we fit it.

Which brands do you work with?

We install and work on the leading makes, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.

Will you make a mess?

Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before any work starts, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we’ve done.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Does air conditioning work as heating?

Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. We confirm the heating function of the model we quote.
