About air conditioning in WD5
Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers ducted systems, wall-mounted split systems and multi-split systems, and the jobs we see most are portable units that are noisy and barely cope and commercial rooms that are too warm for staff.
Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. It takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems, and we clear up before we go.
- You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.
Pricing in WD5
The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

Around Abbots Langley
Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to Francis Combe Academy, The Unicorn Public House and Tanners Wood Junior Mixed and Infant School, among other places. Other local landmarks include Church of St Lawrence the Martyr (0.5 miles north) and Woodside Playing Fields (1.3 miles south-east). For rail, the closest station is Kings Langley station, roughly 0.9 miles west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Hilfield Castle (4.9 miles south-east) and Hertfordshire Fire Brigade Museum (3.7 miles south). Not far away are Longspring Wood and Verulamium Lake.
Air conditioning across WD5: local notes
Our air conditioning work across WD5 takes in places such as Woodside, Abbots Langley and Leavesden and the smaller places around them. Every place on our WD5 list (4 in all) is covered.
London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps.
Abbots Langley: If you work from home near Kings Langley station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool. With historic houses such as High Elms Manor about 1.1 miles east, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules.
Looking after your system
A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Close windows and doors while the system is cooling
- Let filters dry fully before you put them back
- Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
- Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
We show you how to take the filters out and clean them. Clean them every few weeks when the system is in heavy use, or as the manual recommends, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and clutter.
Set it and leave it. Choose the right mode and a comfortable temperature rather than the lowest setting, and close windows and doors while it’s cooling.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in WD5
The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:
- One-off work versus a regular service cycle
- The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
- What kind of system it is
- The brand, model and parts involved
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we look at the job first, from photos or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
Asking for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- The remote or wall controller showing any error
- The paperwork from the last service, if you have it
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Rented and managed buildings
Landlords, letting agents and managing agents book us, not only the people who live or work in the property. Let us know who will give us access and who the records should go to and we’ll copy in whoever needs it.
Bigger systems bring extra duties: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.
Why deal with it now?
Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg can’t use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. R410A, used in many older systems, has a GWP of 2088.
What your quote should include
- What records you get at the end
- Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
- Who does the electrical work, and whether they can certify it
- If the figure could change on the day
WD5 questions
How long will the installation take?
Most single-room systems take a day. Multi-room and ducted systems take longer, depending on the pipe routes and access, and we tell you how long on the quote.
Can the outdoor unit go on a roof or at ground level?
We agree it with you on the survey. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We explain the options and any permissions to check.
How do I know what size unit to get?
Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy, so we explain why we have chosen a particular output.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat?
In many cases, but permissions come first. You’ll usually need the landlord’s or management company’s consent for the outdoor unit and the pipe route, so check the lease. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.
When will I hear back?
You’ll hear from us the same working day. For a breakdown that can’t wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.
Does air conditioning work as heating?
Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat a room in winter. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. We confirm the heating function of the model we quote.
