Air conditioning in WD3: how it works
Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. We are often asked to deal with commercial rooms that are too warm for staff and too many options and no clear advice, across VRF systems, air-to-air heat pumps and ceiling cassettes.
If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before any work starts so it doesn’t catch you out. For businesses, we can typically work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.
- We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
- The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.
Pricing in WD3
No two properties are the same, so we price each one individually. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all make a difference.

Air conditioning around WD3
Our air conditioning work across WD3 takes in places such as Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Mill End and the smaller places around them. We cover every place we list for WD3, 20 in all.
WD3 is part of a working area that runs from Greater London to the Sussex coast and out to Oxfordshire and Essex. One phone number covers all of it.
Rickmansworth: Chenies Manor House (roughly 3.7 miles north-west) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on. Around Church of St Mary, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.
What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Write down what you notice: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Why act early?
Where the outdoor unit goes matters to you and to the neighbours. A good position keeps noise down and leaves room for servicing, and it can make a difference to planning. It’s agreed on the survey, not on the day.
What your quote should include
- Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
- Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
- Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it
- Whether the quote is a fixed price
What the work involves, system by system
Ducted systems
A ducted system needs a ceiling void or loft deep enough for the unit and ducts, and access for servicing. The survey confirms whether there’s room.
Electrical supply
The fuse board is looked at during the survey, so the quote covers any electrical work needed. An older board may need extra work and we’ll tell you if yours does.
Signs you need air conditioning
Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. Portables push their warm air out through a hose in the window, so the window can’t close properly and the noisy part of the unit is in the room. With a split system, the compressor lives outside.
It’s time to call us if you’re dealing with:
- Bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer
- Too many options and no clear advice
- Expensive direct electric heating
- An office, shop or restaurant that is uncomfortable for staff and customers
Questions from WD3
Do I need planning permission?
It can do. The rules differ for heat pumps and cooling-only air conditioning, and for houses, flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We point out anything that may need permission at the survey, and the council has the final say. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. It’s worth checking before booking and we’ll gladly show you ours.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
How do I know what size unit to get?
We size each room on the survey, from its size, glazing, orientation and use. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy, so we explain why we’ve chosen a particular output.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. You get a written record of every visit, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.
Where will you put the outdoor unit?
We agree it with you on the survey. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We’ll tell you what to check before we fit it.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for breakdowns that cannot wait. Ring 07833 053749 any time and explain the problem.
