How air conditioning works in HP2
We approach an installation much as a doctor approaches a patient: survey first, install second, commission and hand over last. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. We are often asked to deal with too many options and no clear advice and a loft room or top floor that bakes in summer, on VRF systems, ducted systems and air-to-air heat pumps.
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.
- First comes a site survey, or pictures and measurements for a straightforward job.
- Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
- The units go up and the pipework, cable and condensate drain are run neatly between them.
- We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
- Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.
What you’ll pay
Our prices page shows typical ranges, but each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk, and we’ll talk you through it.
What you get with us

- Members of Checkatrade
- 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns
- NICEIC approved electrical contractors
Getting a quote
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.

Air conditioning across HP2: local notes
Planning rules are the same across England, HP2 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.
Message us from anywhere in HP2 and you will hear back the same working day. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line.
Hemel Hempstead: About 4.6 miles south-east stands High Elms Manor. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one. Living close to St Barnabas? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is.
How we price air conditioning
A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- The brand, model and parts involved
- One-off work versus a regular service cycle
- The number of rooms, units or zones
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.
What to send for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
- The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
- A few photos of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To get going, phone us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.
Looking after your system
A little care keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Have the system serviced once a year
- Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
- Let filters dry fully before you put them back
- Close windows and doors while the system is cooling
The work area is left tidy: sheets removed, packaging cleared up and pipe holes sealed. Pipework outside is covered in trunking or insulated and neatly fixed as agreed on the survey.
Do not ignore small changes. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display normally means something needs attention and catching it early keeps the repair small.
Owner checks or an engineer?
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.
Why it fails
Not everyone is after cooling. Old direct electric heaters turn electricity straight into heat, while a heat pump moves heat in from the outside air, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. Most modern split systems work this way.
Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:
- An old system that needs replacing
- An office, shop or restaurant that’s uncomfortable for staff and customers
- Fans and portables that don’t keep up
- Too many options and no clear advice
Common questions in HP2
Which type of system should I choose?
It depends on the rooms and the building. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. The survey ends with a recommendation and the reasons.
Where will you put the outdoor unit?
Wall brackets, ground level and flat roofs are all options, wherever the pipe route, airflow and servicing access work best. We also think about noise near bedrooms and neighbours, and the position can affect planning.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
Do you work for landlords and businesses?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes, 24/7. When you call, tell us the make, what’s happening and any error code, and we will talk you through the next steps.
Is the equipment covered by a warranty?
The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.
