Air conditioning in HP1: how it works
Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. The work covers multi-split systems, air-to-air heat pumps and VRF systems, and the jobs we see most are portable units that are noisy and barely cope and an old system that needs replacing.
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. From there, the work takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.
- We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
- We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
- On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
- Power is wired in, the joints are proved leak-tight under pressure and a vacuum pump draws out air and moisture.
- We commission the system, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas records and the manufacturer’s warranty details.
How we quote
The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
What you get with us
- A fixed price before any work starts
- One number for homes and businesses across London and the South East
- An F-Gas certified company, as the law requires
- MCS certification for heat pump work

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, with the rate that applies to your job. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For a fixed-price quote, call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

Air conditioning around HP1
Our air conditioning work across HP1 takes in places such as Hemel Hempstead, Grovehill and Woodhall Farm and the smaller places around them. We cover every place we list for HP1, 15 in all.
Refrigerant work is done by F-gas qualified engineers for a certified company, and the electrics come under our NICEIC approval, in HP1 as everywhere else.
Warner's End: Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed. Living close to St Alban's Church? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is.
What air conditioning cannot fix
It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:
- An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
- Central heating repairs
- Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
Different systems, different jobs
Electrical supply
Most systems need their own circuit from the consumer unit. We’re NICEIC approved, so we fit and certify the circuit ourselves and that covers the Part P side.
Wall-mounted split systems
Bedrooms, offices and living spaces are where wall-mounted units are most often fitted. The unit goes where it spreads the air well and the filters are easy to reach rather than blowing straight at the bed or desk.
Keeping the system healthy
A little care keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Keep the F-Gas records, commissioning details and warranty information together
- Refit filters properly after cleaning
- Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use
Questions after the installation go to the same number. Tell us what the system is doing, and any code on the display and we’ll help you sort it out.
Have the system serviced once a year. The engineer cleans the coils and drain, checks the electrics and the refrigerant circuit and catches small problems early and keeps the warranty paperwork right where servicing is a condition.
How we price air conditioning
The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- The condition of any existing system
- The size of the job
- Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
- The distance and route between the indoor and outdoor units
A single unit or a whole estate, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. The price is fixed before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- The make and model of the system, from the label
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Questions from HP1
Can air conditioning heat my home as well?
In most cases, yes: modern splits are usually heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust points out that an air-to-air heat pump is often just called air conditioning. Some cooling-only models exist, so we confirm it for the model on your quote.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
How long does air conditioning installation take?
It takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access. The survey tells us how long your installation will need, so you can plan around it.
Are you F-Gas certified?
As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. We’re also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
Which manufacturers do you install and repair?
We install and work on the leading makes, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?
Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling, which we check on the survey.
