About air conditioning in WD4
Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: survey first, install second, commission and hand over last. At sign-off, the system is tested in each mode, the controls are explained and the F-Gas records are left with you. We are often asked to deal with expensive direct electric heating and fans and portables that don’t keep up, on ducted systems, wall-mounted split systems and VRF systems.
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. The middle part takes longest, which takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.
- First comes a site survey, or photos and measurements for a straightforward job.
- Cooling loads are worked out room by room, and the written price names the make, the model and every position.
- On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
- The electrical supply is connected, and the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated.
- Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.
What affects the price in WD4

What air conditioning cannot fix
To be straight with you, there are a few things this work will not fix:
- Gas boiler or central heating faults (we don’t work on gas boilers)
- An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
- Damp or condensation caused by leaks or poor ventilation in the building (that needs the cause fixing)
Why deal with it now?
New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use F gases with a GWP above 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.
Comparing quotes
- Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
- Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
- Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
- Whether the quote is a fixed price
Before you call an engineer
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
What affects the cost of air conditioning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:
- Whether the existing supply is suitable
- How easy the units are to reach
- The size of the job
- The brand, model and parts involved
The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, the access and the parts and time the job needs. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
- Your installation or service records
- Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
- Your consumer unit or fuse board
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
Your questions about air conditioning in WD4
Do I need planning permission?
That depends on what’s being fitted and where. Heat pumps on houses in England can be permitted development when they meet set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, while a unit that only cools is not covered and needs checking with the council. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we will agree what happens next.
Which manufacturers do you install and repair?
We work with the leading brands, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we’ll take it from there.
What does it cost to install air conditioning?
Single-room systems start from £1,200 + VAT and are typically up to £2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from photos.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. Each visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
