Air conditioning across WD19: what to expect

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers VRF systems, wall-mounted split systems and ceiling cassettes, and common reasons people get in touch are not knowing which system, size or brand to choose and a business premises that overheats in summer.

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, it takes anything from a day for one room to several days for a multi-room or ducted system.

  1. First comes a site survey, or pictures and measurements for a straightforward job.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

Air conditioning across WD19

Across WD19, from Watford, Oxhey and Colney Butts to the villages, homes range from older terraces and cottages to new estates and flats. Each install starts with a survey of the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.

Enquiries from WD19 get a reply on the working day they arrive. Breakdowns can go to the 24/7 line instead.

Carpenders Park: Living close to Oxhey Chapel? Some older properties in parts like that are protected, and the survey finds out whether yours is. Plenty of people near Carpenders Park station split the week between the train and a spare room, and that spare room is often the first to get a unit.

Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in WD19

Our prices page gives typical ranges, and your quote is built on your job. What we look at:

  • Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
  • The equipment or parts the job needs
  • The condition of any existing system
  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed

One room or a whole building, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You will have a fixed price before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.

Before you get in touch

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
  • The make and model of the system, from the label
  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
  • Your installation or service records

Getting a quote is straightforward. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.

What happens if it’s left?

Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg can’t use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What’s in the price and what isn’t
  • What paperwork you’ll receive afterwards
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
  • Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first

Different systems, different jobs

Electrical supply

A dedicated circuit is normally needed. As NICEIC approved contractors, we install it and issue the certificate and that covers the Part P side.

Ceiling cassettes

Ceiling cassettes fit into the ceiling and push air out in several directions and they’re a common choice for offices, shops and larger rooms.

Looking after it afterwards

How well a system lasts depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not cover or box in the outdoor unit
  • Book an annual service
  • Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe

We show you how to take the filters out and clean them. Clean them every few weeks when the system is in heavy use, following the manual, and keep space clear around the outdoor unit.

Report drips, noises or error codes early. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display normally means something needs attention, and early repairs are normally simpler.

Your questions about air conditioning in WD19

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

Single-room systems start from £1,200 + VAT and are typically up to £2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from pictures.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

Will you need to do electrical work?

Normally, yes. The fuse board is checked on the survey, and any electrical work goes on the quote and we install and certify the circuit as NICEIC approved contractors.

How soon will you get back to me?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Will you make a mess?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

Are you F-Gas certified?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.

What size air conditioning unit do I need?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.
