Air conditioning for homes and businesses in Hunsdon

Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit is notifiable unless a registered competent person does it, and our NICEIC approval means we install and certify it ourselves. Whether you call it air con, air conditioning or an air-to-air heat pump, in Hunsdon it means the same thing to us: the right unit in the right place, fitted and commissioned properly.

Villages like Hunsdon often have older houses and cottages, some of them listed. We check that first, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building.

The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer and it’s worth keeping safe.

What the work involves, system by system

Offices, shops and commercial rooms

Commercial rooms often need more than one unit and controls that suit how the space is used. Sizing takes account of occupants, equipment and windows and we plan the installation around your opening hours where we can.

Multi-split systems

Two rooms on a multi-split are typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. The route from the outdoor unit to each room is the main variable.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Draughts and missing insulation
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
  • A room that can’t take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)

Not sure which it is? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

Air conditioning in Hunsdon: the local picture

Census 2021 figures found about 74% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have space for the outdoor unit, and several rooms can share one on a multi-split. Hunsdon’s centre falls inside the Hunsdon Conservation Area. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Hunsdon and it takes in 2 conservation areas. About 37 listed entries lie within half a mile of central Hunsdon, Old House (grade II*) among them. That matters for air conditioning: permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, and a unit used only for cooling is not covered at all, so we check with East Hertfordshire council, usually the planning authority here where necessary.

If your home is in one of the older streets near St Francis Chapel, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install. Much Hadham Palace (roughly 3.6 miles north) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on.

Hunsdon: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Hunsdon?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Is Hunsdon in your area for air conditioning?

We do: Hunsdon falls inside our working area. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?

Most of the time, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.

Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?

It depends on the system and the property. In England, an air source heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, but a cooling-only unit is not covered, so check with the council. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

What does it cost to install air conditioning?

Single-room systems start from £1,200 + VAT and are typically up to £2,200 + VAT. The price includes supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation and is fixed after a survey or from pictures.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

The process

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. It takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems, and we tidy up before we leave. Somewhere like Hunsdon, it helps to know about lanes, gates and where to park.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Then the prescription: the right system and size for each room, on a fixed-price quote.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
  5. The sign-off: commissioning, a walk through the controls, and the F-Gas records and warranty details.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in
  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
