About air source heat pumps in Southampton
As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes across Southampton. Air-to-water systems feed your radiators or underfloor heating and hot water cylinder, while air-to-air systems heat rooms directly through indoor units and can cool them too. We will explain which type fits your home and why. The work covers radiator systems, underfloor heating and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and people most often call us about planning and permitted development questions and questions about where the outdoor unit can go.
Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
What you will pay
Typical ranges are on our prices page, but each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will explain what it covers.

How to get a quote
VAT is set out clearly on every quote, with the rate that applies to your job. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it on the quote. To get one, call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.

Where we fit heat pumps in Southampton
Our air source heat pumps work across Southampton takes in places such as Shirley, Regents Park and Townhill Park and the smaller places around them. Every place on our Southampton list (40 in all) is covered.
Refrigerant work is done by F-gas qualified engineers for a certified company, and the electrics come under our NICEIC approval. Southampton includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of outdoor coils and fixings. Outdoor unit position and regular servicing both help near the sea.
Southampton: Live in one of the older houses around Saint Mary's? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. If your home is listed, like Southampton Tudor House and Garden about 1.4 miles south, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.
Fixed-price quotes for air source heat pumps in Southampton
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- What state the existing equipment is in
- The number of rooms, units or zones
- One-off work versus a regular service cycle
- The pipe route between the units
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.
What to send for a quote
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- A few photos of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
- The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. Then you get a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
When it’s something else
To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:
- Planning approval where permitted development does not apply
- A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
- Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
Signs you need air source heat pumps
People also ask about air-to-air heat pumps because they heat and cool. They warm rooms directly through indoor units, and can cool them when it’s hot. Whether a grant applies depends on the scheme conditions.
It’s time to call us if you’re dealing with:
- Planning and permitted development questions
- Working out where a cylinder could go
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
- Questions about where the outdoor unit can go
Why act early?
Permitted development rules can change, and conditions vary between properties. We look at the planning position early, so there are no surprises, including conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions.
Comparing quotes
- Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
- Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
- Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
- Whether the manufacturer’s warranty depends on regular servicing
Questions from Southampton
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
We find out during the survey. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. Keep them with the manual and the warranty documents.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll agree what happens next.
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?
Often not in England, as many heat pumps on houses are permitted development provided the conditions are met. The outdoor unit must be 1.5 m³ or less, comply with MCS 020(a), not be cooling-only and not be within a listed building’s curtilage.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
A typical installation takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible, and we explain it in advance.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
