Our air conditioning service in SO40
Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. The work covers multi-split systems, VRF systems and wall-mounted split systems, and the jobs we see most are a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and an ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life.
There’s very little for you to do on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we have done.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
- Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
- The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
- Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Getting a quote
Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.
Local landmarks in Totton
Around Totton, our work takes us to homes and businesses near The Cross Keys Public House, Hounsdown School and Abbotswood Junior School and the streets around them. Totton’s nearest station is Totton station, about 1 mile east. Other landmarks nearby include Tatchbury Mount Hospital (1.3 miles north-west) and Eling Experience (0.8 miles east). Not far away are Testwood Lakes.
Where we install in SO40
In SO40, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.
Refrigerant work is done by F-gas qualified engineers for a certified company, while NICEIC approval covers the electrical work, in SO40 as everywhere else. Near the coast in SO40, outdoor units last longer with shelter from sea wind and a yearly service, and some manufacturers offer corrosion-protected coils.
Totton: About 4.5 miles east stands Southampton Tudor House and Garden. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one. If your home is in one of the older streets near Church of St Winfred, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.
Signs you need air conditioning
Everything that uses electricity in a room ends up as heat. A small office or a busy room can warm up fast with equipment and people in it, even on a mild day.
Reasons to give us a call include:
- Working from home in a room that gets too warm
- Rooms under the roof that stay hot into the night
- A room that’s unbearable on warm days
- Rooms heated by plug-in heaters
Aftercare tips
After the visit, a few habits help:
- Keep to the service interval the manufacturer recommends
- Avoid setting it far colder than you need
- Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter
Questions after the installation go to the same number. Let us know what’s happening and any error code and we’ll help you sort it out.
Do not ignore small changes. Water from the indoor unit, a new rattle or a code on the display normally means something needs attention, and early repairs are normally simpler.
Before you call an engineer
Owners can handle the everyday basics: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
Why act early?
A system that’s the wrong size never works well. Too small, and it runs flat out without catching up; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy. Getting the sizing right at the survey stage avoids both problems.
Comparing quotes
- What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
- What records you get at the end
- Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
- Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
Your questions about air conditioning in SO40
Which brands do you work with?
Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.
Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?
In most cases, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. To replace your main heating, there are extra conditions, including for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps.
How do you size the system?
We size each room on the survey, from its size, glazing, orientation and use. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.
Do you work on commercial properties?
Yes. Homeowners, landlords, agents and businesses all book us across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
Will you need to do electrical work?
Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.
