Air conditioning in SO43: how it works

Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, with VRF for larger buildings. The right choice depends on the rooms, the building and how visible you want the indoor units to be, and we explain the options on the survey. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, ducted systems and multi-split systems, and people most often call us about fans and portables that don’t keep up and bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer.

Every visit follows the same order: agree the plan on site, put the dust sheets down, do the work, check the system and talk you through it. The visit itself takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.

Air conditioning across SO43: local notes

In SO43, we install in places such as Lyndhurst, Emery Down and Minstead and well beyond. Every place on our SO43 list (6 in all) is covered.

An F-Gas certified company does the refrigerant side, and the electrics come under our NICEIC approval, in SO43 as everywhere else.

Lyndhurst: Homes near Church of Our Lady and St Edward are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed.

Why act early?

New systems now use lower-impact refrigerants. Since 2025, new single split systems with less than 3 kg of refrigerant cannot use F gases with a GWP above 750, which is why R32, with a GWP of 675, is now common. R410A, used in many older systems, has a GWP of 2088.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
  • Proof of F-Gas company certification
  • Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why

What we are called out for in SO43

Computers, screens, lighting and people all give off heat. A home office with a couple of screens, or a meeting room with a few people in it, warms up quickly, even on a mild day.

These are the situations we see most often:

  • Fans and portables that don’t keep up
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • Rooms heated by plug-in heaters
  • An old system that needs replacing

Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in SO43

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:

  • How far the pipework has to run, and where
  • The number of rooms, units or zones
  • Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
  • Access, including height, roofs and ladders

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is looked at first, and the price is agreed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The fuse board and where it is in the property
  • A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
  • A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
  • Your installation or service records

For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email and tell us about the property and what you need. A few pictures make it quicker. You’ll hear back from us the same working day.

Safe owner checks

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Common questions in SO43

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

Do you cover SO43?

Yes. Our engineers work in SO43, as part of our area across London and the South East. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

In most cases. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.

Will you make a mess?

Protection goes down first: dust sheets over floors and anything close to the work. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling, which we check on the survey.

Will I need planning permission?

It depends on the system and the property. Heat pumps on houses in England can be permitted development when they meet set conditions, including the MCS 020(a) noise check, but a cooling-only unit is not covered, so check with the council. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas have tighter rules. This is general information, not legal advice.
