Air conditioning in SO16: how it works
Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. Typical jobs include an old system that needs replacing and commercial rooms that are too warm for staff, on ceiling cassettes, ducted systems and wall-mounted split systems.
Each visit runs to the same pattern: check the plan with you, put the dust sheets down, carry out the job, test what we’ve done and explain it all to you. The visit itself takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
- Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
- Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
- We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.
How we quote
The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Enquiries from SO16 get a reply on the working day they arrive. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line. Near the coast in SO16, outdoor units last longer with shelter from sea wind and a yearly service, and some manufacturers offer corrosion-protected coils.
Maybush: Around St Peter's Church, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install. About 2.9 miles south-east stands Southampton Tudor House and Garden. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.
What owners can safely do
Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.
Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and call us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line.
Keeping the system healthy
Systems last better with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Flag any change in how the system sounds or performs
- Keep the room closed while it runs
- Keep the F-Gas records, commissioning details and warranty information together
- Avoid setting it far colder than you need
Commissioning is the last stage: every mode is tested before we go. Once it’s running properly, we take you through the controls and settings, so you are confident using it.
Book an annual service. A service cleans what you can’t reach and picks up faults before they stop the system, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.
What the work involves, system by system
Multi-split systems
You can mix indoor unit types on many multi-split systems, choosing what suits each room, depending on the model. We plan the mix on the survey.
Outdoor unit positions
We think about noise when we choose the spot: keeping it clear of bedrooms and boundaries where we can, and on anti-vibration mounts. Position can also affect planning.
Fixed-price quotes for air conditioning in SO16
The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:
- How easy the units are to reach
- The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
- One-off work versus a regular service cycle
Leaving a fault or an overdue service rarely makes the work cheaper. Small problems, from blocked filters to slow leaks, tend to get worse, and a struggling system uses more electricity to do less. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 07833 053749 for straight advice and a fixed price.
Helping us quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price a simple job. Send what you can of the following:
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- The rating plate or label on any existing unit
- Any error code or flashing light on the display
- Wide pictures of the room or the existing unit
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.
FAQs for SO16
Will skipping a service affect the warranty?
Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.
Which accreditations do you hold?
F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.
Which manufacturers do you install and repair?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
Will you need to do electrical work?
In most cases, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Which type of system should I choose?
There’s no single best type. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. The survey ends with a recommendation and the reasons.
Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?
It can do. Heat pumps and cooling-only units are treated differently, and so are flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We flag anything that may need permission when we survey, and the council has the final say. This is general information, not legal advice.
