Air source heat pumps in Inner Avenue, done properly
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. If you are dealing with moving away from fossil-fuel heating and not knowing whether a grant applies, we can sort it out.
Cottages and older homes near Inner Avenue can lose heat faster, which a heat loss calculation will show. Sometimes insulating first makes more sense.
Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order, and every service is written up.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Inner Avenue
Is Inner Avenue within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Inner Avenue?
Inner Avenue is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.
Can I do any of the installation myself?
Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
Do I get paperwork after the visit?
Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is recorded and F-Gas records kept where they apply.
Leave it or put it right?
If the emitters can’t give out enough heat, some rooms won’t get warm enough. The survey picks this up before installation. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.
One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You will have a fixed price before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.

Common problems we fix in Inner Avenue
Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Planning the change before the boiler fails gives you time to survey, design and apply for any grant instead of making a rushed decision when the heating stops.
Look out for any of the following:
- Finding a place for the outdoor unit
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
- No space for a hot water cylinder
If your home is listed, like Southampton Tudor House and Garden about 1.2 miles south, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Air source heat pumps around Inner Avenue
At about 2 miles from the coast, Inner Avenue is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. The Avenue Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Inner Avenue, within about a third of a mile. There are 6 conservation areas within a mile of the centre of Inner Avenue. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 60 within half a mile of the centre, such as The Old Farm House Public House (grade II*). For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Southampton council, which normally handles Inner Avenue where necessary. Valuation Office Agency council tax records put about 45% of homes in Inner Avenue and the neighbourhoods around it before 1919, and about 61% of households live in flats, according to Census 2021 figures. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. In flats, space for an outdoor unit and a cylinder can be limited, and the lease and freeholder come into it, so air-to-air is sometimes the better fit.
For a home near St Denys station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better.

The process
Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we show you what we’ve done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We load the van from the survey notes so the work in Inner Avenue can be done in one go where possible.
- We start with your plans and the property.
- A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- Installation follows on the agreed dates.
- After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records
Getting a price
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.

How we price air source heat pumps
We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The size of the job
The cost depends on the system and the number of rooms or units, the access and the parts and time the job needs. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
What to send for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price a simple job. Useful things to send:
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
- A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.
From one of our customers
“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
