Air source heat pumps in Hounsdown, done properly

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. We’re often asked to deal with ageing boilers that will need replacing and replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

If your home near Hounsdown has no mains gas, the grant can be bigger. Until March 2027, homes on oil or LPG without mains gas can get an extra £1,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, so we go through them with you rather than leave you to find the small print.

The process

Protection comes first: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved, and we tidy up before we leave. Seeing the property in pictures first helps us plan the trip to Hounsdown.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
  5. The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go

How to get a quote

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Advice

Hounsdown: your questions answered

Is Hounsdown within the area you cover?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Hounsdown?

Hounsdown is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Do you look at the job first?

Yes, always. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

The work takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We confirm the timing after the survey, and you can phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email to book it.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.

Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we’ll tell you what your brand asks for.

Homes in Hounsdown and heat pumps

The coast is only about 2 miles from Hounsdown. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The last census (2021) found about 70% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

With Southampton Tudor House and Garden about 4.1 miles east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Different systems, different jobs

Radiators and underfloor heating

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators may need to be larger so we check them against each room’s heat loss.

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump heats water for your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water cylinder. It replaces the boiler as the main heat source, and is MCS certified when we install it.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Hounsdown?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has made people ask whether their home could qualify. Whether you can get the grant depends on your home and the scheme conditions and we confirm it before you go ahead.

It’s time to call us if you’re dealing with:

  • Checking emitters for a heat pump
  • Not knowing whether a grant applies
  • A boiler that’s getting old

Older homes near Colbury Christ Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

What your quote should include

  • Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
  • The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
  • If the figure could change on the day

Rented and managed buildings

Records are where property maintenance often slips. Each visit produces a dated record, plus the F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved, so you can show what was done and when.

We also work for facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings in Hounsdown and across Southampton. Larger buildings can be done in stages to keep disruption down.

A customer’s words

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
