Air source heat pumps in Coxford, done properly
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, hot water cylinders and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and common reasons people get in touch are checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and deciding on the outdoor unit position.
If your home near Coxford has no mains gas, the grant can be bigger. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

Coxford questions
Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Coxford?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Coxford holds about 4 listed buildings and structures. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Southampton council, typically the authority for Coxford first.
Is Coxford within the area you cover?
Yes. Coxford is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?
Yes, but only where it becomes the home’s main heating. An air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, meets the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and is in a home. Fitted alongside a boiler, it won’t qualify.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Can you set up regular servicing?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is recorded and F-Gas records kept where they apply.
Which brands do you work with?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.
What accreditations do you have?
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re also Checkatrade members.
Heat pumps in Coxford: local notes
Coxford is within about 2 miles of the coast. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The 2021 Census found about 36% of households in terraced houses. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important.
Historic houses such as South Stoneham House, about 2.8 miles east, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Older homes near St Jude's Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.
Coxford is about 2 miles north-west of Southampton, in Southampton. We cover Coxford for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of Southampton. Our list for Southampton has 40 entries, and Coxford is one. The nearest of our city pages is Guildford, around 43 miles from Coxford.
Jobs in SO16 and SO15 are looked at, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. When it’s something else
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
- Improving the building’s insulation
- Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will tell you honestly.

What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally everything is tested, recorded and explained. The middle part takes longest, which takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. A few pictures let us plan a visit to a place like Coxford.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go

Looking after your system
Aftercare is straightforward, and it helps at the next service:
- Keep to regular servicing
- Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
- Read the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand
If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated, as the installer applies for it.
Have the system serviced regularly. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.
Owner checks or an engineer?
Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.
