Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Itchen
We install air source heat pumps in Itchen and across Southampton, and we’re MCS certified. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. Typical jobs include choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, across underfloor heating, air-to-water heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.
For a house near Itchen, space outside is rarely the problem, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.
Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and its longer extensions apply to its air-to-water units only. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Itchen?
Extensions, renovations and loft conversions are a natural time to rethink the heating. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.
Keep an eye out for these signs:
- Checking eligibility for a heat pump grant
- Deciding on the outdoor unit position
- Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
For a home near Woolston station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better.

Itchen questions
Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Itchen?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Itchen holds about 7 listed buildings and structures. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Southampton council, typically the authority for Itchen.
Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Itchen?
It can. Itchen is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.
Is there VAT on a heat pump?
Under HMRC Notice 708/6, a heat pump installed in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. With air-to-air, HMRC’s view depends on the product, so we confirm the VAT on the quote.
How quickly will you reply?
You’ll hear from us the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.
Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?
There is a £2,500 grant for air-to-air, but only under strict conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating, meet the home’s full heating demand, be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
How the job changes from property to property
VAT on heat pumps
Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. Businesses pay the standard rate.
Heat loss surveys
Getting the survey right avoids undersized or oversized systems and that matters for comfort and running.
After we have gone
How well a system lasts depends on use and care. We suggest:
- Clear leaves and debris from the outdoor unit
- Book a yearly service
- Store the MCS certificate and warranty documents together
Once commissioned, we register the installation with MCS and give you the certificate. File it with the warranty documents for future reference.
Don’t cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains so the heat can get into the room.
The process
We keep the work area tidy as we go, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. The visit takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We plan the visit to Itchen from the survey or your photos.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.
Before we arrive
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property
Getting a price
Getting a quote is straightforward. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.
