Air conditioning in E14: how it works
We approach an installation much as a doctor approaches a patient: survey first, install second, commission and hand over last. The sign-off includes testing every mode, showing you the controls and handing over the F-Gas records. We’re often asked to deal with a portable unit with a hose out of the window and rooms heated by plug-in heaters, across ceiling cassettes, wall-mounted split systems and multi-split systems.
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
- It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

Where we install in E14
In E14, we install in places such as London, Mile End and Bow Common and well beyond. Every place on our E14 list (21 in all) is covered.
Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and E14 sits within it. One phone number covers all of it.
Bow Common: Close to Limehouse station? A small study or box room used for work can normally be cooled with a single indoor unit. Sutton House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.
Rented and managed buildings
The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system and we’re happy to deal with whoever it is.
Bigger systems bring extra duties: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.
Signs you need air conditioning
Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Comfortable staff and customers are the usual reason businesses get in touch, along with keeping equipment rooms at a steady temperature.
Any of these is worth a proper look:
- Portable units that are noisy and barely cope
- A loft conversion that is too warm to use
- Old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient
- Too many options and no clear advice
System by system
Ducted systems
Ducted systems need space for the unit and the ductwork plus an access hatch for maintenance. We check that on the survey before recommending one.
Pipework and condensate drains
Air conditioning takes moisture out of the air when it cools, which the condensate drain takes away. Where it can’t fall naturally to a drain, a condensate pump lifts it and we allow for that in the quote.
Why deal with it now?
For homeowners, timing can matter for VAT: HMRC zero-rates the installation of energy-saving materials in homes until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. Whether a particular system qualifies depends on the facts, so we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
What your quote should include
- Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
- Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
- How extra work would be agreed if they find something unexpected
E14: your questions answered
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.
How do I know what size unit to get?
Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy, so we explain why we have chosen a particular output.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?
Typically, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
Is there a survey before the work?
Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your photos and details where the job is simple. A fixed-price quote follows.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, we work the same way: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.
