How air conditioning works in E15

Air conditioning isn’t only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. The work covers ceiling cassettes, air-to-air heat pumps and wall-mounted split systems, and people most often call us about working from home in a room that gets too warm and an old system that needs replacing.

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with sheets down and mess cleared as we go. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. The visit takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Testing: the circuit is pressure tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

What affects the price in E15

Air conditioning across E15

In E15, we install in places such as Leyton, Stratford and Forest Gate and well beyond. We cover every place we list for E15, 13 in all.

London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. We’re F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps.

Stratford: If you commute from Stratford (London) station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed. About 2.1 miles west stands Sutton House. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Common problems we fix in E15

Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.

What we are most often called about:

  • Working from home in a room that gets too warm
  • A room that’s unbearable on warm days
  • Commercial rooms that are too warm for staff
  • Uncertainty over the right type and size of system

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

When it’s something else

Air conditioning cannot fix everything, and we’ll tell you before work begins. It will not put right:

  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling

Rented and managed buildings

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor is required at least every 5 years for systems over 12 kW. We can arrange it, prepare the system for it and fix what it finds.

For anyone managing more than one building, we can quote and plan the work across all of them. Each property gets its own records, so the files stay tidy.

E15: your questions answered

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

It can go on a wall bracket, at ground level or on a flat roof, wherever the pipe route, airflow and servicing access work best. Noise near bedrooms and boundaries is part of the decision, and the position can affect planning.

Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?

Sometimes. Heat pumps and cooling-only units are treated differently, and so are flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We flag anything that may need permission when we survey, and the council has the final say. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you protect the property while you work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

Which accreditations do you hold?

As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

How does the warranty work?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.

Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?

It depends on the rooms and the building. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. We recommend one on the survey and explain why.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat?

That depends on the lease, the building and where the outdoor unit could go. Balconies, flat roofs and rear walls can all work, subject to consent, and we check the options on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
