How air source heat pumps works in Brighton and Hove
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. Common call-outs are for a boiler that’s getting old and working out whether radiators need upsizing, across radiator systems, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps.
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your pictures or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. After that, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system.
- Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.
What affects the price in Brighton and Hove

Air source heat pumps around Brighton and Hove
Across Brighton and Hove, from Brighton, Hove and Carlton Hill to the villages, homes range from older houses to new builds, and each needs its own heat pump design. We’re MCS certified and apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
We reply to enquiries from Brighton and Hove the same working day, with a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns. Parts of Brighton and Hove are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on outdoor units. We choose positions and fixings with that in mind.
Brighton: Older homes near St Martin's Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. With Royal Pavilion about 0.8 miles south-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.
When something else is needed
Not every problem is solved by air source heat pumps, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:
- Improving the building’s insulation
- Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
- Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
Keeping the system healthy
So the system stays in good health:
- Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
- Book a yearly service
- Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
- Seal draughts where you can
Now and then in cold weather, the outdoor unit defrosts itself. You might see steam or hear the unit change note and it’s part of how the system works.
Leave space around the outdoor unit. Airflow is what it runs on so keep it unobstructed.
What the work involves, system by system
Heat loss surveys
The survey covers the building fabric and how air moves through it, and the size of each room.
Radiators and underfloor heating
If radiators need upsizing, the quote lists them, so the work is clear.
Why act early?
Permitted development rules can change, and conditions vary between properties. We look at the planning position early, so there are no surprises, including conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions.
Questions to ask before booking
- What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
- What records you get at the end
- Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
Brighton and Hove: your questions answered
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what’s needed, where things go and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, the approach is the same: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
For refrigerant work, both the engineer and the company need the right F-gas credentials. Ask to see proof before booking anyone and we will gladly show you ours.
Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?
The air-to-air grant is £2,500, and only some homes qualify. It must replace fossil-fuel heating and meet the full heating demand of a home, installed by an MCS certified installer.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
Expect it to take from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
How soon will you get back to me?
On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, with a fixed price before work starts.
