Signs you need air source heat pumps in Hove
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has made people ask whether their home could qualify. Eligibility depends on the property, the system and the scheme rules, so we check before you commit.
These are the situations we see most often:
- Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air
- Checking whether planning permission is needed
- Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
Period properties close to Holy Trinity Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Air source heat pumps in Hove, done properly
We install air source heat pumps in Hove and across Brighton and Hove, and we’re MCS certified. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We will explain which type fits your home and why. The work covers underfloor heating, air-to-water heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and people most often call us about checking whether planning permission is needed and deciding on the outdoor unit position.
Most homes around Hove have space for the outdoor unit, and the position has to pass the MCS planning standard’s noise check to count as permitted development.
Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

Hove questions
Is the heat pump grant available in Hove?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Hove, if they qualify. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
Does sea air affect air conditioning in Hove?
It can, as Hove is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.
How does the warranty work?
The manufacturer provides it, on its own terms. Some brands make regular servicing a condition so it’s worth keeping the service records.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
It takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. How much of the heating changes decides most of the time and the timing is set out with your quote.
What accreditations do you have?
As the law requires for refrigerant work, we’re an F-Gas certified company. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.
Is Hove in your area?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, and that includes Hove.
Heat pumps in Hove: local notes
At about 1 mile from the coast, Hove is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The Cliftonville Conservation Area lies close to the centre of Hove, within about a third of a mile. 11 conservation areas lie within a mile of central Hove. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 87 within half a mile of the centre, such as Church of All Saints (grade I). For a heat pump, permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with Brighton and Hove council, typically the planning authority here where needed. The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 62% of homes in and around Hove before 1919, and about 78% of households live in flats, according to the 2021 Census. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. For flats, the first questions are where an outdoor unit could go, whether a cylinder fits and what the lease allows.
With Preston Manor & Gardens about 1.3 miles north-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

What we do, step by step
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. The work itself takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Three things shape a visit in Hove: parking, access to the outside of the building and when suits you.
- Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.
Getting ready for the visit
- Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
- Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
- Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
Getting a price
Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.

Before you call an engineer
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Keep a note of anything odd: error codes, noises, drips, smells or a drop in performance. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
