Air source heat pumps in Aldrington

Heat pumps in Aldrington: local notes

At about 1 mile from the coast, Aldrington is close enough for sea air to matter. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Aldrington and it takes in 3 conservation areas. On the National Heritage List, around 7 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Aldrington; Church Hall of St Peter's Roman Catholic Church (grade II) is one. For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Brighton and Hove council, which normally handles Aldrington where needed. About 43% of homes in Aldrington and the neighbourhoods around it were built before 1919, according to VOA council tax data. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump.

If your home is near Portslade station and heated by a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump can replace it where the survey shows it suits. Live in one of the older houses around St Philip's Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Aldrington

Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Sizing by rule of thumb is not good enough. If you are dealing with checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump, we can help.

Homes around Aldrington usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder, so the main questions are heat loss, radiators and the electrics.

The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Heat loss surveys

Getting the survey right avoids undersized or oversized systems, and both cause problems.

What happens on the day

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. In a place like Aldrington, parking is rarely an issue, but tell us about gates and access to the back of the property.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
  3. The design covers the heat pump, emitters, hot water and outdoor unit.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records

Get a fixed-price quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

Advice

Aftercare tips

So the system stays in good health:

  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note and it’s part of how the system works.

Keep radiators and indoor units unobstructed so the heat can get into the room.

FAQs for Aldrington

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Aldrington?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Aldrington, if they qualify. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Aldrington?

It can. Aldrington is within about 1 mile of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

How much time does a heat pump install need?

As a guide, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before work begins.

Will I need planning consent for an air source heat pump?

Often not in England, as many heat pumps on houses are permitted development provided the conditions are met. The outdoor unit must be 1.5 m³ or less, comply with MCS 020(a), not be cooling-only and not be within a listed building’s curtilage.

Will you make a mess?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.

When it’s something else

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work can’t put right:

  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
  • Planning decisions, which rest with the council

If in doubt, call us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-air heat pumps

A customer’s words
