Kemptown: your questions answered
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Kemptown?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The centre of Kemptown is in the East Cliff Conservation Area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Brighton and Hove council, which is usually the planning authority for Kemptown.
Is the heat pump grant available in Kemptown?
Kemptown is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
How do you keep the place clean during the work?
We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and the area is kept tidy throughout. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.
Do you work for landlords and businesses?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.
Do you look at the job first?
Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it and the fixed price is built on it.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
Air source heat pumps in Kemptown
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler does not qualify. If you are dealing with ageing boilers that will need replacing and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump, we can help.
Cottages and older homes near Kemptown can lose heat faster, which a heat loss calculation will show. Sometimes insulation first is the better investment.
Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Before you call an engineer
Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
How we price air source heat pumps
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
- What state the existing equipment is in
- The distance and route between the indoor and outdoor units
Our prices page shows typical ranges, but each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed-price quote, ring 07833 053749 or email us, and we’ll explain what it covers.
Before you get in touch
Before you ask for a quote, gather:
- Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
Getting a quote is straightforward. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.
Heat pumps in Kemptown: local notes
The coast is only about 1 mile from Kemptown. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures put about 41% of homes across Kemptown and its surrounding area before 1919, and the last census (2021) found about 68% of households live in flats. Period properties can still suit a heat pump, but the design has to start from accurate heat loss figures. For flats, the first questions are where an outdoor unit could go, whether a cylinder fits and what the lease allows.
Royal Pavilion, roughly 1 mile west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings. If your home is one of the older properties near St George's Church, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

What we do, step by step
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Photos of the room and the outside wall help us plan a job near Kemptown.
- First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.
Before we arrive
- Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
- Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
- Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in

Looking after your system
Looking after it is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Find out the grant position at the survey
- Use the settings explained at handover
- Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
After commissioning, the installation is registered under MCS and you receive the certificate. Keep it with the manufacturer’s paperwork, as you may need it later.
Leave space around the outdoor unit. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside so keep it unobstructed.
From one of our customers
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
