Air conditioning in BN1: how it works
Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. The work covers ceiling cassettes, wall-mounted split systems and VRF systems, and people most often call us about an old system that needs replacing and uncertainty over the right type and size of system.
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.
- We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
- Each room is sized and you get a fixed-price quote setting out the equipment and the unit positions.
- On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
- The electrical supply is connected, and the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated.
- The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.
What affects the price in BN1
No two properties are the same, so we price each one individually. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all play a part.

Air conditioning around BN1
In BN1, we install in places such as Brighton, Hove and Carlton Hill and well beyond. Every place on our BN1 list (19 in all) is covered.
London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps. In the coastal parts of BN1, outdoor units benefit from a sheltered position and regular servicing, and some manufacturers offer corrosion-protected coils.
Brighton: If your home is in one of the older streets near St Martin's Church, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install. Close to London Road (Brighton) station? A small study or box room used for work can normally be cooled with a single indoor unit.
When it’s something else
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
- A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
- Problems with a gas boiler or the radiators
Common problems we fix in BN1
Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sunshine through glazing, especially on south and west-facing rooms, adds a lot of heat, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.
Any of these is worth a proper look:
- Commercial rooms that are too warm for staff
- Rooms heated by plug-in heaters
- A system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement
- Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
System by system
Ducted systems
A ducted system needs a ceiling void or loft deep enough for the unit and ducts plus an access hatch for maintenance. We check that on the survey before recommending one.
Offices, shops and commercial rooms
For bigger buildings, VRF systems link many indoor units to shared outdoor plant. Commercial and VRF systems are priced after a survey and the quote sets out the design.
Pricing air conditioning in BN1
Your quote is based on your property. We take into account:
- Whether it’s a one-off job or part of a maintenance contract
- The pipe route between the units
- What electrical work the job needs
- How easy the units are to reach
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is looked at first, and the price is agreed before work begins.
Asking for a quote
A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
- The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
- Any previous service or F-Gas records
- The rating plate or label on any existing unit
Getting a quote is straightforward. Call or email with a few details and we will come back to you the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.
FAQs for BN1
Do I need a new electrical circuit?
Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
Do you look at the job first?
Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the job needs and how to do it, and the quote is based on that.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Which manufacturers do you install and repair?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.
What size air conditioning unit do I need?
Floor area is only part of it. Glazing, orientation, the roof and what goes on in the room all affect it, and we take them all into account on the survey.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we will tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.
Do you work in BN1?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, BN1 included.
