About our air source heat pumps in Rottingdean
Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit can’t be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If you’re dealing with checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and questions about listed buildings or conservation areas, we can help.
Homes around Rottingdean normally have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
The records are your system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer and it’s worth keeping safe.

How we price air source heat pumps
The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. We look at:
- The size of the job
- The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
- The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
What you pay depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, how easy the units are to reach and the parts and time the job needs. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.
What we need to know
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price a simple job. Useful things to send:
- A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number
- A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light
- The outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits or would go
Every quote shows the VAT clearly, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it on the quote. To get one, ring 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.
Air source heat pumps around Rottingdean
Rottingdean is within about 1 mile of the coast. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. Valuation Office Agency council tax records date about 53% of homes in the Rottingdean area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and the last census (2021) found about 74% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
Historic houses such as Royal Pavilion, about 3.2 miles west, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Live in one of the older houses around St Wulfran's Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.
Rottingdean is about 3 miles west of Telscombe, in Brighton and Hove. Whatever kind of property you have in Rottingdean, our engineers can help with air source heat pumps. We reply to enquiries the same working day, and there’s a 24/7 emergency line. Across Brighton and Hove, we cover 30 places, and Rottingdean is one of them.

Rottingdean: your questions answered
Is Rottingdean within the area you cover?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Can I fit a heat pump in Rottingdean without planning permission?
It depends on the property. Historic England lists about 4 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Rottingdean. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where necessary, we check with the local planning authority (for Rottingdean, typically Brighton and Hove council).
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.
How does the warranty work?
Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.
What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?
For homes, currently none: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
The heat loss survey answers that, room by room. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.
What happens on the day
Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. The work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Work in Rottingdean is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

What happens if it’s left?
Replacing a boiler in a hurry when it breaks leaves little time to consider a heat pump. Surveying and designing in advance means the system is sized right and any grant is applied for while the old heating still works. Planning ahead for a job in Rottingdean means we can bring everything needed.
One room or a whole building, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. The price is fixed before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.
