Air con installation in RM1

Air conditioning in RM1: how it works

Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see and we talk you through it on the survey. We’re often asked to deal with old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient and portable units that are noisy and barely cope, across ceiling cassettes, ducted systems and air-to-air heat pumps.

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. We survey the property, or work from your pictures for a simple job.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. Sheets go down first, then the indoor unit and the condenser are mounted.
  4. Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
  5. We commission, show you the controls and leave the F-Gas and warranty paperwork.

What you’ll pay

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Ask for a quote

Every quote starts with a look at the job, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. Then you get a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.

Message us from anywhere in RM1 and you’ll hear back the same working day. For a breakdown, use the 24/7 line.

Romford: Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it. Close to Romford station? A small study or box room used for work can normally be cooled with a single indoor unit.

Let and managed properties

We also work for facilities teams in offices, schools and public buildings across Greater London. Larger buildings can be done in stages to keep disruption down.

We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork, and we will keep everyone informed.

Signs you need air conditioning

Most overheating comes from heat gained through the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.

Common reasons people call us include:

  • A system on old refrigerant that is due for replacement
  • A loft room or top floor that bakes in summer
  • A home office that warms up with screens and equipment
  • An office, shop or restaurant that is uncomfortable for staff and customers

Looking after it afterwards

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Book an annual service
  • Keep the F-Gas records, commissioning details and warranty information together
  • Clean the filters every few weeks when the system is in heavy use
  • Never run the system with the filters out

We show you how to take the filters out and clean them. Clean them every few weeks when the system is in heavy use, following the manual, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and clutter.

Clean the filters regularly, not just at the service. Clean filters keep the air moving and help the system work as designed, so it uses less electricity for the same comfort.

System by system

Ducted systems

Ducted units can feed several rooms through a network of ducts, which suits new builds, extensions and refurbishments where ceilings are open.

Electrical supply

We check the consumer unit on the survey, so the quote covers any electrical work needed. Older boards sometimes need more work to take a new circuit, and we explain why if so.

RM1 questions

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Will you need to do electrical work?

Most of the time. We check your consumer unit on the survey and include any electrical work on the quote, and our NICEIC approval covers the installation and certificate.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.

Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?

It can do. The rules differ for heat pumps and cooling-only air conditioning, and for houses, flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We point out anything that may need permission at the survey and the council makes the decision. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

It depends on the rooms, the system and the pipe route, but a single-room split is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Long pipe runs, difficult access, a new circuit and premium indoor units push the price up, while commercial systems are priced after a survey.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.
