Air conditioning in RM7

Air conditioning across RM7: what to expect

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. The work covers wall-mounted split systems, ceiling cassettes and ducted systems, and the jobs we see most are a study or office that overheats during the day and commercial rooms that are too warm for staff.

The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First we check the system or the space against the plan, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. You receive one fixed figure covering the kit, the fitting and the positions we agreed.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

What you’ll pay

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Where we install in RM7

Planning rules are the same across England, RM7 included: an air-to-air system that heats as well as cools can be permitted development on a house, but cooling-only units, listed buildings and outdoor units facing a road in conservation areas need more care.

Message us from anywhere in RM7 and you’ll hear back the same working day. Breakdowns can go to the 24/7 line instead.

Rush Green: Hare Hall (roughly 2.1 miles north-east) shows the area has its share of heritage. A listed home needs consent before an outdoor unit or pipework goes on. If you commute from Romford station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed.

When it’s something else

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air conditioning will not do:

  • Building damp that has a structural cause
  • A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
  • Gas boiler or central heating faults (we do not work on gas boilers)

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.

For landlords and property managers

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, it’s worth checking the agreement for who looks after the system. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the records to whoever needs them.

From a single flat to a whole estate, the approach is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, access agreed with the people on site and paperwork at the end.

What we are called out for in RM7

Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. A portable unit has to vent its warm air through a hose out of a window, which lets some heat back in, and its compressor sits in the room with you. A fixed split system puts the compressor outside.

What we’re most often called about:

  • Uncertainty over the right type and size of system
  • Commercial rooms that are too warm for staff
  • A room that’s unbearable on warm days
  • Fans and portables that don’t keep up

Common questions in RM7

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. Ask to see proof before booking anyone, and we’re happy to show ours.

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

We agree it with you on the survey. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We’ll tell you what to check before we fit it.

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

From £1,200 + VAT for a single-room split, with a typical range of £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. That covers supply, installation, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork and is fixed after a survey or from pictures.

Should I choose wall-mounted, ducted or cassette?

There’s no single best type. Wall-mounted splits suit single rooms, multi-splits run several rooms from one outdoor unit, ducted systems hide the unit in the ceiling, and cassettes suit offices and larger rooms. The survey ends with a recommendation and the reasons.
