Air conditioning in N20: how it works
The best installations are planned before a single hole is drilled. Each room is assessed for its size, windows, direction and how it’s used, and we agree the unit positions and the route for the pipes, cable and drain, all before the price is fixed. The work covers VRF systems, air-to-air heat pumps and wall-mounted split systems, and the jobs we see most are a loft conversion that’s too warm to use and old electric heaters you’d like to replace with something more efficient.
If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before work begins so it does not catch you out. For businesses, we can usually work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.
- You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
- Output, positions and price are settled before anything is booked.
- We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
- Pipework, cable and drain are run, the circuit is connected and the pipework is pressure tested and evacuated.
- The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

Air conditioning around N20

Oakleigh Park: With historic houses such as Heath Hall about 3.5 miles south, it’s a reminder that older homes nearby may be listed, which changes the planning rules. If you commute from Oakleigh Park station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that’s needed.
Signs you need air conditioning
Bedrooms that are too warm at night are a frequent reason for a call. An open window does not always cool a bedroom that has warmed up all day, especially on a still night.
Common reasons people call us are:
- Fans and portables that do not keep up
- Expensive direct electric heating
- An old system that needs replacing
- Bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer
What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.
For landlords and property managers
The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is and we’re happy to deal with whoever it is.
If you look after several properties, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Each property gets its own records, so each one has its own history.
What happens if it’s left?
Fans and portables move warm air around rather than removing it. A properly installed split moves heat outside, keeps the noisy parts out of the room and most of the time heats too, so it works for you in winter as well.
What your quote should include
- Whether the company is F-Gas certified, and whether you can check it
- What paperwork you’ll receive afterwards
- Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
- What’s in the price and what is not
N20: your questions answered
What warranty do I get?
Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.
How quickly will you reply?
The same working day. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Are you F-Gas certified?
We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. We are also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Can I use air conditioning to heat a room?
Most of the time, yes. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into the room, so it gives out more heat than the electricity it uses. If you want it to replace your main heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps and the conditions for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
We agree it with you on the survey. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We’ll tell you what to check before we fit it.
Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?
In most cases, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we’re NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.
