How air conditioning works in N10

Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see, and we explain the options on the survey. Common call-outs are for a room that’s unbearable on warm days and not knowing which system, size or brand to choose, on multi-split systems, ducted systems and VRF systems.

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
  5. The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.

We fit and service air conditioning in homes and premises around Fortismere School, The Mossy Well pub and Muswell Hill Primary School. You’ll also find Alexandra Park (0.7 miles east) and Tollington School (within half a mile west). For rail, the closest station is Alexandra Palace station, about 1.1 miles north-east of the centre. The countryside around Muswell Hill includes Glebelands Local Nature Reserve and Darland's Lake.

Air conditioning across N10

From Friern Barnet, New Southgate and Muswell Hill outwards, N10 has every kind of home. We survey every property before we quote.

From London flats to coastal homes and country cottages, London and the South East have every kind of property. We’re F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps.

Muswell Hill: Bedrooms under the roof and rooms with big sunny windows are usually the first to overheat, so they’re the usual place to start. About 1.6 miles south-west stands Athlone House. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Aftercare tips

Looking after it is simple, and it helps at the next service:

  • Close windows and doors while the system is cooling
  • Book an annual service
  • Use moderate settings for comfort and economy
  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe

The work area is left tidy: sheets removed, packaging cleared up and pipe holes sealed. Outside, the pipework is neatly fixed and protected, so the job looks as tidy as it works.

Keep the outdoor unit clear. Leaves, plants, bins and stored items around it restrict the airflow, which makes the whole system less efficient.

Leave it or put it right?

Putting up with another summer of portable units and fans rarely makes sense. A properly installed split moves heat outside, keeps the noisy parts out of the room and most of the time heats too, so it earns its keep all year.

Comparing quotes

  • What records you get at the end
  • Whether the quote shows VAT clearly
  • Whether extra work needs your approval first
  • If the figure could change on the day

What affects the quote in N10

Every job gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system
  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on
  • The distance and route between the indoor and outdoor units

One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You’ll have a fixed price before work begins, and the quote sets out the VAT.

What we need to know

Good photos often save a visit. The most useful are:

  • The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
  • Your consumer unit or fuse board
  • Your installation or service records
  • The address and the type of property

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

What the work involves, system by system

Multi-split systems

You can mix indoor unit types on many multi-split systems: a wall unit in one room, a ducted or floor unit in another, as the manufacturer allows. The survey settles which units go where.

Ceiling cassettes

Cassettes are good at even airflow across a large floor area, and the slim grille sits neatly in the ceiling.

N10: your questions answered

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Every job is looked at first, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. Then you get a fixed-price quote.

Do you work on all makes?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we will take it from there.

What accreditations do you have?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

How do I know what size unit to get?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Can air conditioning heat my home as well?

Yes, most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust points out that an air-to-air heat pump is often just called air conditioning. Some cooling-only models exist, so we confirm it for the model on your quote.

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It must have clear airflow and space for servicing, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We will tell you what to check before we fit it.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.
