Air conditioning in N6: how it works

A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, two rooms on a multi-split £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Those ranges include supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation, and commercial VRF systems are priced after a survey. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, ducted systems and VRF systems, and common reasons people get in touch are a portable unit with a hose out of the window and commercial rooms that are too warm for staff.

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
  5. The sign-off: commissioning, a walk through the controls, and the F-Gas records and warranty details.

Air conditioning across N6: local notes

From Upper Holloway, Highgate and Fortis Green outwards, N6 has every kind of home. Each install starts with a survey of the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.

London and the South East cover everything from city flats to rural cottages. Our work is F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved for the electrics and MCS certified for heat pumps.

Highgate: If you work from home near Upper Holloway station, a home office that overheats is one of the easiest rooms to cool. Around Highgate United Reformed Church, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.

What we’re called out for in N6

Commercial spaces gain heat from people, equipment, lighting and glazing. Comfortable staff and customers are the usual reason businesses get in touch, and some rooms need cooling for the equipment as much as the people.

Customers normally contact us when they notice something like this:

  • A loft conversion that is too warm to use
  • Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
  • Commercial rooms that are too warm for staff
  • Rooms heated by plug-in heaters

Safe owner checks

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and ring us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form.

When it’s something else

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
  • Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)

Pricing air conditioning in N6

The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • What kind of system it is
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • How easy the units are to reach
  • How many units are involved

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Faults and wear in a system tend to grow, and a system working harder than it should costs more to run. If you’re not sure what’s needed, ring 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed price.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these details help:

  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
  • Any error code or flashing light on the display
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit
  • Where the property is and what kind of building it is

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your photos and details. Then you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Common questions in N6

How does the warranty work?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

Can you fit air conditioning in a leasehold flat?

It depends on the building and the lease. An outdoor unit can sometimes go on a balcony, roof or rear wall, with consent and the survey looks at every option. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is planning permission needed for the outdoor unit?

It can do. The rules differ for heat pumps and cooling-only air conditioning, and for houses, flats, listed buildings and conservation areas. We point out anything that may need permission at the survey and the council makes the decision. This is general information, not legal advice.

What does it cost to install air conditioning?

Typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT for a single-room split, depending on the room, the access and the pipe route. Long pipe runs, difficult access, a new circuit and premium indoor units push the price up, while commercial systems are priced after a survey.

What size air conditioning unit do I need?

We size each room on the survey, from its size, glazing, orientation and use. An undersized unit never catches up, and an oversized one cycles and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

We work with the leading brands, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we’ll take it from there.
