Air conditioning in HA8: how it works

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi are among the brands we fit. The survey ends with a recommendation and the reasons for it, and the manufacturer’s warranty terms are set out on your quote. Typical jobs include working from home in a room that gets too warm and bedrooms and offices that overheat in summer, across ducted systems, wall-mounted split systems and air-to-air heat pumps.

If the system has to be off for part of the visit, we tell you before work begins so it doesn’t catch you out. For businesses, we can normally work room by room or zone by zone. The work takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. You send photos, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. We run and connect the pipes, cable and drain, then pressure test and evacuate the circuit.
  5. It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

What you’ll pay

The cost depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, how easy the units are to reach and the parts and time the job needs. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

How to get a quote

Some jobs can be priced from photos, while others need a survey. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Burnt Oak: If you commute from Mill Hill Broadway station and work from home on other days, one wall-mounted unit in the home office is often all that is needed. Headstone Manor, about 4.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.

What the work involves, system by system

Ducted systems

One ducted unit can serve more than one room through separate ducts and grilles, which suits new builds, extensions and refurbishments where ceilings are open.

Multi-split systems

A multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit. It saves wall space outside and suits homes where several rooms need cooling and each indoor unit has its own controls.

When something else is needed

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Central heating repairs
  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
  • A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation

Why deal with it now?

Refrigerant rules have changed what new systems use. From 2025, single splits under 3 kg cannot use refrigerants with a GWP over 750, so new splits use refrigerants such as R32, with a GWP of 675. Older R410A systems have a GWP of 2088.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Disconnecting a system means dealing with refrigerant, which only a qualified engineer can do, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Questions from HA8

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we’ll propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.

Do I need planning permission?

Not necessarily. On a house, air-to-water heat pumps and, since 2025, air-to-air systems that heat as well as cool can be permitted development if they meet the conditions. Permission is more likely to come up for cooling-only units, listed buildings, flats and road-facing positions in conservation areas and the survey picks it up. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do you cover HA8?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of the South East, and that includes HA8.

Which type of air conditioning is best?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted systems need a ceiling void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat?

Often, yes, but there are extra steps. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls, so check the lease. Planning rules for flats are tighter too, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

Warranty is the manufacturer’s own, on its terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.
